I prefer Woodfords. Simple as that.

Especially in winter.

In winter, it's gonna be geographic proximity..... both are awesome and have very different character. Sacramento and bay folk will go loaf, south lake can choose as they please with woodfords being bit closer, and those over the hill are way closer to Woodfords.
I also feel sugar loaf is more sandbagged in grading and commitment levels are higher on certain.
Ton of moderate sport in the loaf area too, just not on the project.

Well said sir. Very little sport climbing at Woodfords, but much more crack climbs in the realm of mortals.

Sugarloaf is fun, lots to do but I’ve climbed every route there. And I mean every route. It’s a great resource if you’re coming from the west. It has something for everyone. And the rope swing can’t be beat.

Woodfords I don’t think you could climb out in a lifetime. Even if you did, you’ll spot a thousand routes in doing so that have yet to be climbed. Personally, I don’t care for it much. I don’t really know why.  I’ve climbed maybe 50 routes there, most were good, some great, a few phenomenal. I think the downside to it, is that everything looks the same and navigating around can be confusing. Helps to have a tour guide I guess. Maybe I just need to spend a little more time there.

Both areas are great, and any climber would love to have either locally, let alone both.

And getting there is an uphill battle

They’re both solid areas with different characters. Sugarloaf is definitely more compact stone. Woodfords obviously has more routes. I’ve lived within about the hour range of both areas in my life, I’d say that proximity dictates which one I’ve frequented more.

That’s a hard debate to pick which is better. I’ll have to lean into bigamy on this one.

Loaf > fortress.  Cloudsburst > loaf.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
