Got some dirtbag time coming up and thinking bout learning aid & trying out everyone's fave big wall gumby route, south face of washington column. Want to practice a bit at home before setting out.

So I need

  • Ladders 2 sets
  • Fifi
  • Belay seat?
  • Adjustable daisies
  • Offset cams, excluding .3/.4
  • Haul bag (only pickup)
  • Anything else you think that I need for SFWC (no portaledge)
  • optional:  small basic harness (doesn't need to be big wall harness)

Prefer to pick up in boulder/golden so I can get it earlier but open to have you ship

Ellen, I've got some of the stuff you're looking for (and more!) I'll shoot you an email later today. I'm in Ned, but work in Boulder so if you didn't wanna drive up the canyon we could meet after work.

Also, lemme know if you want a partner for aid climbing! I really enjoy aid climbing, and am more than happy to give very patient belays.

Ellen.
practices your systems and climb the column in a day.
hauling on that route to dinner ledge is nuts.

Hey Jon, I’m all about sharing beta with fellow MP’ers and helping set folks up for success. That said, I wouldn’t put Wash Column in the “nuts” category—doing it in two days didn’t feel especially challenging or complicated from a systems perspective. I’ve only hauled to the ledge once, but I don’t recall any major hiccups.

Now, ask me about the time I hauled loads on Moby Grape in NH to impress a girl (now my wife)… that one might qualify as “nuts.”

Vertical camping is fun! But I'll make sure not to visit the valley until I can free el cap in a push

Best bets for the column and hauling is to skip hiking and climb it in a day.
or choose a wall with far less people on it and enjoy the mellow vertical car camp experience

Also you want to bring some cam hooks and spend some time beforehand learning to trust them. And as many tiny cams as you can procure. You want to avoid placing nuts if at all possible. Offset cams yes but not metolius offsets. Aliens or totems ideal. Adjustable daisies not required regular ones better IMHO. If you haven’t already check out Chris McNamara’s how to big wall climb book, highly recommended.

I’m with Jon… bivying on and hauling this thing given what might be happening on route / on the roof / on that ledge that’s totally out of your control on your first big wall is a risky choice. Plus you’re banking on the ledge and it not being a shit show. You’re going to be learning many new skills at once, subtracting hauling would make it a much more enjoyable experience.

In a pinch you can bypass the whole ledge and the roof pitch by going left on a different route, can’t remember the name.

I’m local and will not be big walling any time soon unfortunately. But I have a lot of gear if you want to borrow, hit me up. Recommend spending a lot of time practicing aiding and jugging beforehand :) enjoy! I’m jealous I wanna go to the valley

If anyone has ideas for other walls that are beginner friendly and don't need portaledge I'm all ears.

Only in need of ladders now. Doesn't need to have spreader bar or be in Boulder.
