I finally managed to climb something this year. I grew up in a totalitarian country. Kimmel was just cancelled immediately after FCC threatened ABC’s license because Kimmel speculated that the Kirk shooter had MAGA ties. This sounds painfully familiar, and I’ll just leave it at that. Signed, Former Army officer and combat veteran, and a firm believer in democracy and free discourse. |

Frank Steinwrote: Interesting difference in how Kimmels remarks, which in no way advocated or celebrated violence, were treated and the lack of reaction from the FCC after a Fox News host advocated euthanizing homeless people last week. |

Frank, that is a crazy looking climb.. Isa ready to rumble this was kind of crazy. leading Directissima with a sprained ankle. you can see how I could not tie my shoe all the way up because it was so swollen. |

Frank Steinwrote: Maple? What route? Sea of cobbles...nice pic! |

Frank Steinwrote: You fought for this freedom, it’s horrific how that sacrifice is being unappreciated. That said, I’d have to guess that YouTube will host him, likely get another studio hopefully the same folks! I’m finally getting outdoors as well. This year promises to be a Joshua Tree season for me. See you out there Lori! |

Steve and I did great work on the new Pinnacles guidebook today. Very pleasing. |

I know this is a climbing thread and that it’s populated by us old folks and do diverge off topic quite often and we try to be somewhat politically correct occasionally but I just had share this picture I got from a friend taken out his bedroom window today. |

Frank Steinwrote: The FCC was doing ABC (Disney) a huge favor. I think ABC was stuck by certain contract obligations with Kimmel, and the FCC just unstuck them. In fact, and I can't prove this, but I think Kimmel wanted to go bye-bye as well. His ratings are absolutely in the toilet, and have been for some time, quite the embarassment, even for current Hollywood. His show has progressively degenerated into an endless, petty TDS party, and he often has had to resort to juvenile insults directed even at his guests. His ratings were lower than Colbert's, and Colbert got canned. Affiliated groups like Nexstar and Sinclair also canned Kimmel's ass, even without the help of the FCC. Looks like he will have to relocate to streaming or social media somewhere, cause that dog don't hunt no more. And, BTW, it was my understanding that he clearly wasn't "speculating" but had made a rather definitive statement that the shooter was MAGA. You know, we could've used you a decade or more ago when the Left was busy inventing modern Cancel Culture. |

I took my first barefoot hike yesterday— A full 2 miles and caused more anxiety than hiking around rattlesnakes. I left the house, a little distracted without my hiking shoes in hand and only discovered it once I was parked and ready to head out. It’s this guy who is so feared so I tread carefully. While hiking I listened to another full podcast, this time by Dr. Stacy Simms. The discussion was around women's health and nutrition, especially for athletes. https://open.spotify.com/episode/37HUAmld0cYeKak4NOCBVW?si=d3EK9rKtQ1uh9r5fwtnAOQ&context=spotify%3Ashow%3A7iQXmUT7XGuZSzAMjoNWlX "Women are not small men" about sums it up. With each passing year of climbing I have been more muscularly unbalanced and fatigued, with the suspicion that it had to do with how I was using my body and how I was training. Stacey unlocked some answers for me. At about 20:48 she talks about differences in build and strength between women and men... the angle of hip to knee ratio, the angle at which women land when doing sports creating more ACL injuries. Women are 'quad dominant'... naturally defaulting to our quads, preferentially using quads over hamstrings and glutes. This was a huge ah-hah insight for me. Working the leg press at the gym--which is what the guy climbers do-- but not attending to the whole back muscle chain, has left me vulnerable in some areas, to knee injuries for one. Men, apparently, don't have this problem to this degree. So, as I've wondered why none of the training manuals I have read are a good fit for me... it's because they are written by men, mainly for (young) men. Stacey's credentials are impeccable....in fact, she's done more post doc work than I even knew. So I am very grateful to have some new input on hitting the gym, using these insights to build more strength and balance and hopefully to be a better climber. --- About to turn 72... I am keeping an ear open more than ever for the aging advice. Stacey certainly provides more than others. The protein thing, for sure... is huge. Sleep. But what about zone training... what is even "Zone 2" for me? (i have an idea). How long/hard should I go on daily hikes to pick up some additional stamina and endurance? Is there an upper limit for HR? "Nobody knows." (anyone seen the Washington sketch with Nate Bargatze?) |

Lori Milaswrote: Use of quads may be good for everyone? I’ve started stair climbing again, and it’s helping with my gym climbing. I should read up more about this? Meanwhile many of my less experienced climbing friends seem to think my upper body and finger strengths is what gets me up climbs, but it’s really focusing upon the legs.

Like Cherokee says, Lucky to be alive and to be here. Not the mountains, but the Humboldt Redwoods coast living in our van the TADMOBL for the week. We prefer to boondock than stay in campgrounds and are currently enjoying our morning coffee at our secret secluded bivy site that overlooks the ocean. The wife takes long beachcombing hikes while I fish the surf. Had a first for me happen yesterday. While fishing for surf perch I reeled in my first Dungeness Crab. Though undersized and out of season it brought a smile to my face and the realization that like momma Gump said, "Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get." All fish and the crab released and sent back to their home. Life is good, Carry on, Tad n Mo. |
