Top roping reduces risk, which is the essence of trad climbing. Top roping is ruining climbing.

*Yawn*. If you're not free soloing you're not being risky enough, bro. Pro is for the weak, bro.

For years many people have made the mistake claiming that risk is an inherent component of trad climbing. This is wrong. Trad climbing is climbing from the ground up, placing protection as you go. e.g. If it's a continuous crack you can sew it up and it's very low risk but it's still trad. Some climbs entail risk and that's an essential part of the challenge for that specific climb, which is great and a part of those climbs, but it's not needed for all traditional climbs.

this is probably the dumbest argument I’ve ever seen. totems are too safe, so don’t buy them? Some of us enjoy climbing, but still wanna make it back to our families.

Free solo if you’re lacking the sense of risk.

The solution is obviously to carry two racks. One of totems and one standard rack. Place both bit only clip the standard rack. That way people know you have totems bit choose not to use them

to be fair, I didn’t realize how old the post was but the reactions to me not realizing that are hilarious. I’m gonna go with first day on the Internet that was  gold.

Yeah - I wanted to find an old post to bring up the notification; used one from 2005.

Ha, that’s for real? I thought you made that alert! I’ve never resurrected that old of a post so I’ve never seen it.

I have a rack of totems. I wish they were that revolutionary. They offer reduced weight, and better grip in flared cracks but i’m not sending the nose of El Cap anytime soon just off pure totem swagger

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
