What are the best climbing areas near Wilmington Delaware?

My wife just got a job in Wilmington so we will be moving out there in the next month or so and I’ve been looking on mountain project and luckily I saw that there’s a rope and bouldering area in town and some other crags not too far away in Pennsylvania but was wondering where I should look for after work spots or quick day trips. I’m excited to be able to go up to New York and New Hampshire for longer weekend trips but am hoping to find some worthwhile climbing closeby. In terms of grades and style of climbing I’ve been getting into trad climbing this past year so am just trying to get mileage on easy routes and for sport I’m comfortable trying to lead 10’s and am climbing around v3 for bouldering. I haven’t done much climbing in cold weather so I’m guessing it’s personal preference/willingness to suffer but when do people usually stop climbing rock outside and switch to ice climbing or just gyms around here? I’m not sure which gym will be close by to where I end working since the one in Delaware is fairly far south of the city and the rest that are close by are near Philadelphia where I may end up working since I’m looking for a new it job and currently drive about an hour each way so anything less than that I’ll be happy with lol. Once I actually move I’ll make a post in the partner finder as well but if anyone lives in the area and would be able to show me around some of the crags I’d be very appreciative! |

Sport Climbing - You have Safe Harbor and Birdsboro close enough for day trips. Safe has some good slabs and while the bird is a choss factory there are a handful of great routes in the 11/12 range. You are also probably 6 hours or so away from the New and prob the same from Rumney Trad - You have chickies which isn’t great, go to move is obviously the Gunks. Maybe some stuff in MD as well. Bouldering - This is where PA shines in my opinion. Haycock, Gretna, and Gov Stable are all relatively close. All top notch but it’s Diabase so you’re gonna want cooler temps. Climbing in the 40s is perfect and down into 20s is doable. Coopers is closer to you as well, and I want to say there’s a handful of crags in MD. |

Anton Swrote: Spot on info by Anton. Just wanted to add the Delaware Rock Gym is a very nice and reasonably priced indoor facility. Also numerous gyms in Philly if you end up in North Wilmington and not in one of the southern burbs. |

Tim Schafstallwrote: Awesome thank you both for all the info, we ended up getting a place in Claymont since it’s pretty close to my wife’s work so she can take the bus into the office as she doesn’t drive. And hopefully I can get a position in Philadelphia so I can hit up a gym on my way home in the winter since it seems like we’d be about 30 minutes away from the gym south of Wilmington. Someone dm’d me recommending safe harbor so I picked up the guidebook for the area and it looks super convent to get around to the different climbs there so it’ll be fun to work my way through the area. |

The Delaware gym, when I was going there, was a nice place, rarely crowded. And Safe Harbor is certainly worth the trip, with plenty of routes and easy access. If you tell people that you climb and you live in DE, they might think you're doomed, but far from it. |

WF WF51wrote: Yeah it will definitely be different than living in SoCal or the bay where I could climb outside year round and even go bouldering on my way home from work at castle rock but seems like there’s more than enough within a couple hours for day trips and lots of options for weekends. I may have to try ice climbing because I think I might go crazy having to just climb indoors all winter or look into how far I’ll need to drive to get to where the crags are warm enough in the winter for it not to be a complete sufferfest for actual rock climbing lol |

Hey Justin, I lived in DE for a few years. Sent you a DM, I've got the skinny on a couple more spots if you're cool. |
