Climbing with kids in Connecticut tomorrow
|
|
Climbing with my kids tomorrow. Probably Chatfield Hollow, but I'd entertain other suggestions. Message me if interested. (Summer pic from City of Rocks, ID. Rye Crisp, 5.8) |

Not sure what grade your kids climb but I find wolf rock is a better option for beginners |

Across the road at the 9 Wall is kid friendlier. Do both. |

Could be mistaken but I believe that the '9 wall' is now off-limits. |

Thanks for the feedback. I'll keep Wolf Rock in mind for the future, but Chatfield is also a selfish scouting expedition. Does anyone know how I might determine the status of the 9 wall? Also, while I'm asking questions, has anyone been to Pine Ledges? It's described in the CT climbing guidebook, but I couldn't find it on mountain project. There's a route there named the Triple Lindy. Made me want to rewatch Back to School. |

Sean Sullivanwrote: 9 wall is still open I was out there not to long ago, a blue blazed trail goes over it. They redid the parking lot last year. I don’t know what routes they’re thinking are good for kids. Rusty old timer is a great route but that’s about it |

Thanks for the info about 9 wall. There was enough stuff at Chatfield to keep us busy, so it was never really a consideration. Does anyone know anything about Pine Ledge? Not finding anything but bouldering on the internet, but there's allegedly sport climbing. While I'm asking questions, does anyone know why climbing's allowed at West Rock, but not East Rock? Seems strange. |

Been to Pine Ledge once. My memory is that it isn't the most 'kid friendly' crag around---lots of overhangs and sloping holds, though the approach is easy. It is included in the second edition of Rock Climbing Connecticut by Dave Fasulo, published by Falcon. I have also heard of frequent copperhead encounters there, though we didn't see any. As far as the East and West Rock access situation, I have no idea, though it is possible that the rock is less stable on East Rock. |

Cheers! I've got this same question posted elsewhere. Regarding Pine Ledges, it sounds like it is accessible though the information isn't available online. (Good reason to purchase the guidebook). As for the East vs West, it is the difference between a city park (east) vs a state park (west). |

East Rock is above a busy road and they don't want any cars or bikers smashed by falling choss. I've hiked the base a couple times and it has massive potential but the hill is steep so anything that comes down will end up on the road. I found a spot up there under an overlook that had cans and bottles up to my waist, it was surreal, kinda like under the castle at East Peak. Gotta love CT! |

Makes sense. Thanks for the reply. |
