What’s up with the mountain project “Leaderboards”?

This Leaderboard feature only seems to show up on the mobile site and is basically a collection of who has logged “fell/hung” the most times for any given route. I already feel like you should only be able to log a route once, maybe if MP is going to become your climbing journal then have your extra ticks only be visible to you instead of clogging up the ticks section.  I dunno, but I thought this leaderboard thing was interesting/weird.

Yeah, I just noticed it yesterday and assumed it’s some weird and misguided attempt to turn mountain project into strava or 8a?  It’s super strange because it’s hard to imagine anyone actually caring who’s redpointed a route the most times let alone gotten the most climb/fell/hung’s.

Gotta wonder who thought that was a good idea.  I assume not a climber given that the metrics for success seem to be pretty out of touch with an actual climber’s values.

it could be a cool idea if implemented correctly. But currently, it couldn’t be more useless. Like, we have 8a for who has climbed the hardest at a crag (albeit a bit of a mess). Maybe if MP is gonna add leaderboards make it who has climbed the most routes at a crag at a glance. Like on the main page it could show the top 10 people who have climbed the most there. Or on your profile it’ll show your top ten crags. But as it stands it’s still basically who has just added the most beta notes for every time they fell off a specific route!

A useless feature indeed, but that Private User is totally killing it!

As far as a person's ticks clogging up the route page, a person's name used to appear just once, with all their ticks listed immediately below, and most of them hidden if there were more than a couple. The ticking every attempt thing never bothered me, but this seemed like a good solution for those it does annoy. I wonder why they took it away.

(p.s--the Naked Edge "leaderboard" is pretty wild!)

I've updated my chrome extension, Mountain Project Stats Enhanced, to remove the leaderboard from the stats page for people (like myself) who don't find it super valuable. The extension also adds dates and sorting to the other tables on that page.

The only leaderboard that matters on mountain project is for the memes thread: mpmemes.com

I heard the leaderboard comically referred to as the "wall of shame". Hoping it is rolled back soon, definitely a feature nobody needed.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
