Grivel G12's for snowboard boots?

Hi everyone,

I'm planning a fast(er) and light(er) splitboard trip with my buddy. In the past, I've brought a separate pair of mountaineering boots to throw on for technical parts of a climb, but our next trip involves no technical climbing.

I only have a pair of Grivel G12's and was wondering if anyone has any solutions to getting them fitted to a pair of traditional snowboard boots?

I've looked online at Petzl and CAMP pieces of gear that would convert the heel bail clip into a universal strap, but when I tried a Petzl one in store, the bar didn't align correctly, which left for the potential for the whole piece to slip out of the hole where it connects to the crampon. The hole of the Grivel crampon is oval shaped, which ensures that the heel bail piece can only be removed at a certain angle.

If anyone has any ideas, I would greatly appreciate it!

Have you tried putting them on your snowboard boots? I have grivel semi automatic crampons and they work great on my snowboard boots. I haven’t converted anything. I used to have old strap on crampons and they also worked fine on my snowboard boots.

Yeah, I wasn’t able to fit the wire that holds the heel clip past the sole of the boot. Wouldn’t putting semi automatic crampons on a boot without a heel welt also be unsafe?

If the heel clip won’t fit past the sole of the boot and you already adjusted the length of the crampon then maybe the boots and crampons just aren’t compatible. There are so many different boots. I’ve worn my crampons on boots without a heel welt and they just squish the boot a little and I tightened the straps down and they were fine but you definitely don’t want a crampon coming off mid-climb. Maybe splitboard boots like the jones boots would work better for you. Otherwise strap on crampons may work with your boots.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
