Balancing climbing with other sports you love

What is your method to balance all the stuff you like to do? I love hard core double diamond Mt biking in the high sierras and ski int he winter. My strategy is climb long steep routes on Weds and Mt bike on the weekends. 

Also being a 5.12 sport climber can feel like a full time job to stay in shape! I have a bouldering cave in my garage so I can ride and boulder at home on the same day.

It's really helpful to be independently wealthy. I'm not, but from what I can tell that's pretty key.

You should have kids.

I've found that an average person can generally do about three things well at once. 

For most thats: 1. Family/friends, 2. Work, 3. Hobby/Sport

If you wanna be real good at a couple sports, better say goodbye to one of the other two.

You can obviously rotate which sport in and out but you're not going to be great at either of them if you're rotating back and forth too much, IMO.

Become mediocre at all things, that’s what I do. I pick whatever seems like the most fun that day. I like climbing, running, biking, skiing, snowboarding, and fishing. I also have a full time demanding job as well as a marriage and a house to take care of. Luckily no kids.

You don’t have to be elite at everything, just try to have a good time.

Smoke hella weed and send it, also don’t break your legs. Two very important things for skiing and climbing, one of them absolutely critical

BTW, don't tell each of your loves, about your other sports. No good will come from that!  While you might think it may ease your guilty conscience (because you always ignore one of them), it won't, plus they are jealous mistresses and will probably dump you. You gotta keep em separated. Like 2 of your girlfriends accidentally meeting in spacetime, matter and anti-matter: mutual annihilation. Brother, I speak the truth here. Ignore my advice at you own peril.

balance is only achieved by how well you sleep at night.

Like someone already said, weather is about the only factor in deciding what to do for the day. Unfortunately with the lack of weather balloons the NOAA is throwing up in the air now (with the massive cuts in funding) we might not be able to make those decisions easily anymore. Long live the king.

I try to optimize this too… some things that work for me:

no kids, 20-25 h/week job that is not physically demanding, no alcohol, drugs, or added sugar in my diet, adhere to good sleep hygiene, gentle stretching often - well into my 40’s so these are non negotiable.

I climb 12s pretty regularly and consider myself an expert highliner, mt biker, and skier and put a pretty equal priority on each. I aim for two sports per day four days a week. I emphasize intensity more than volume, way better to do an hour of hard biking than two moderate hours poking around for example. Almost never have full days out climbing, but in two hours it is easy to do two warmup routes and two burns on a project. Having a romantic partner who wants to do the same things helps ALOT. Also lucky to live super close to all the things we like doing.

My work life, sports, and relationships with my partner, family, and friends feels pretty well balanced.
