Custer State Park Camping Question
|
Hello, South Dakota climbers. I would like to take a trip to the Needles area with my family in June (I have never been) and am in need of van camping advice. It looks like the Wrinkled Rock Climbing Area is the place to go for National Forest dispersed camping. Is that true. Are there other places that would work as well? Thank you for the advice! |

As of today, Wrinkled Rock is now closed to camping and overnight parking. |

Derek Swrote: While it was announced today there is currently ZERO signage indicating it, like there is at Breezy. And if there is no signage then I don't see how it's enforceable? In general you can car camp anywhere that's not labeled " day use only" or " no overnight parking" with a 14 day stay limit. If you look carefully there are several good options on or near 244 that fit the bill. |

Leslie and Derek, Thanks so much for your replies. This helps a lot! |

There's a campground just in the start of town has rv spots and tent spots. It was our only luck finding a place |
|
No camping signs are now up at Wrinkled Rock as of last week. The handful of tent pads were dug up as well. Grizzly Creek and Oreville are in good locations with first come first serve options if reservations are booked. Center Lake in the park is same day reservation only. |
|
Loads of dispersed free camping still ..if it's not signed it's legal. Just drive up Iron Mountain Rd, grab a pullout and pitch a tent! |

BITD we all stayed at the Orville Campground https://www.recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/231841. No idea about current situation. |

Mark Bwrote: I don't remember any bugs, but we used to go there at the beginning of August. The weather in June can be all over the place. |

RIP legal Wrinkled Rock camping. The whole nation is going the same way. I'm glad I got into this game before the current era. |
