I’m living in Seward AK this summer and I’m wondering if there is any rock climbing in the area? I’ve been looking on here and the internet in general and I can’t seem to find anything. All I’ve found is Hatcher pass which as a few routes. It seems like most of the rock around Seward is volcanic, chossy and not great for climbing. Not asking for anyone’s secret crags, but if there are areas that have some decent rock I’d love to explore them. I’m sure everyone’s just gonna tell me to go to the Alaska Range, but a trip like that just isn’t in the cards for me this summer unfortunately
Long Answer: Also no. But... There used to be a Facebook page where a local climber, Sam Johnson, posted updated conditions beta on the local boulders he kept scrubbed. There was a bit. Not sure if it is still active.
The only thing that's worse than the rock around there is the weather. It rains, always.
There is a guiding company that run ice climbing trips to the Exit Glacier in the summer. They may be able to give you more beta if there is some to be had. There is a fair bit of exposed rock around there if you wanted to get ambitious and clean it up. I used to climb with a guy who grew up in Seward and he climbed a lot of sporty 5.0 alpine choss.
Big walls of choss across Resurrection Bay. Routes exist here:
I’m actually working for Exit this summer. I’m sure some of those guys have some beta. I’m down to explore some choss here. I found some stuff in Thumb Cove that looked pretty cool.
