For those that have climbed Denali of course. Wondering what your thoughts are on FRS vs. GMRS radios. Pros and cons? Mainly worried about getting weather alerts and not having to carry around something bulky. Can I use something like the 5 watt GMRS Rocky Talkies? Thanks!

If yer on the on West Buttress the rangers @14k give regular weather updates. Ask them before gong high. Lower down on the hill the weather is less of a factor. As such, we did not bother especially as we just acclimated on the WB.

A normal FRS radio will allow you to tune in to the weather and trivia every night, which is both fun and helpful.  It also gives you an easy way to contact the rangers in an emergency.  Given the amount of stuff you’re carrying up there, 1 extra radio is a drop in the bucket and totally worth it.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
