Which climbing destinations are within 1.5 hrs of an international airport

I'm trying to think of climbing destinations within 1.5 hours of an international airport. I like multi-pitch trad climbing and sport. No bouldering. I can think of Red Rock (Harry Reid International Airport), Eldorado / Boulder Canyon (Denver International), and Squamish (Vancouver International). Am I missing any in North America? What about international destinations? |

Define “destination.” Also, how fast do you drive? |

Kalymnos and some remote Scandinavian destinations may be further away than 1.5 hours. But probably nothing in western, southern and central Europe. [Same goes for train stations, by the way. At the European readers: Try going places in Europe by train, no point in further accelerating global warming when we have access to beautiful bullet train networks, pleasant night trains and InterRail/EuRail passes] |

Salt Lake City (SLC). A plethora of rock is within as little as 45 minutes, in Big and Little Cottonwood Canyon and much more within 1.5 hours. Lone Peak, Rock Canyon, American Fork and the list goes on. |

Eldo/Bocan a destination, huh? Cincy's airport to the Red is about an hour and 45 minutes so I'm including that. Yeager Airport is also less than an hour from the New. I would also guess that Hueco is within 1.5hrs from an international airport as well. |

Assuming that the border crossing is open between Eilat in Israel and Jordan, one could probably drive to Wadi Rum from Ramon International Airport in 1.5 hours. Delays permitting. |

There are some 483 international airports in the USA. Here is the list of many international airports in the USA with many regional. Examples FAT -> Yosemite There are so many international airports in the USA that it would be harder to find a major climbing area not near one. Examples PDX -> Smith Rock SLC -> Tetons DEN -> Devils Tower |

I'm wondering what the practical point of this is though, to the OP? Unless you can get a non-stop from your origin airport, you may spend 1-3 hours making a connection plus all the flight time. So when I fly cross country from SoCal to visit my family in CT, whether I : take the local "international" airport at Ontario (20 minutes drive) with a 1-3 hr connection into the local "international" airport at Bradley/Windsor Locks and then family home (30 minutes from airport), or whether I make my husband drive me 1.5 hrs to LAX and take a nonstop to Boston and then make the 2 hr drive from airport to family home... I'm still spending at least 8 hrs of travel time making the journey. The only deciding factor is what the weather is going to be doing at my connections and if I want to visit friends in Boston. I guess if you are a person who works from their computer and you can do that with all the airport and flight time, it doesn't matter how much all the flight and connection time adds up to. But for many people, this is a deciding factor. The other factor is money. If you can fly between two major hubs, the costs can be hundreds of dollars cheaper than between two smaller "international" airports. If you factor in the nonstop plus flight cost components, most places to Las Vegas or maybe Denver would give you the most climbing time within a short time window. |
