Hello. I attempted to climb Denali previously using a guided service. That was quite some time ago and I am wondering if people can recommend guide companies and relate a little bit about their experience with them, including positives and negatives.

Thank you so much.

Hi Paul, I don't have personal experience, but..... my friend summited via West Buttress with RMG several years ago and has glowing things to say about that experience. I hired a guide from AAI last summer for private instruction for Denali prep. He's been a lead guide for West Buttress trips for years now and he was awesome. Hope that helps a bit!

Hello Everyone,

This summer I plan on taking some kind of mountaineering course as a way of getting started in mountaineering. However I'm having a bit of trouble picking a specific Mountaineering School/course. |live near San Diego, CA, so I am planning on traveling a bit for the course.

So, onto some of the schools l've been looking into:

National Outdoor Leadership School

American Alpine Institute

Alaska Mountaineering School

Yamnuska

International School of Mountaineering

Alpine Ascents International

Mountain Madness

Rainier Mountaineering Inc.

Canada West Mountain School

EDIT: you may glean insights from folks who responded to this post.

There have been a few changes since 2011. Current list per NPS website is Alaska Mountaineering School, Alpine Ascents International, American Alpine Institute, International Mountain Guides, Mountain Trip Alaska, NOLS, and Rainier Mountaineering, Inc.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
