Flying in/out Honduras w/ gear question

Howdy all,

Headed to Honduras shortly - looking for others experiences regarding traveling w/ gear. I’m not climbing in Honduras, however the trip is positioned between two climbing trips I’m taking and was planning on carrying on my gear the whole time. I’d be taking triples, a single nut set(no tool), slings/draws, and potentially a 60. I only ask for other experiences because last year when leaving they were extremely picky with my fly fishing gear.

For reference I’ll be in and out of Coxen Hole.

Thanks

If you haven't already, try the reddit r/climbing sub too. Somebody must know

Just curious where you expect to climb. On the mainland? Roatan and the Bay Islands are barely above the current sea level.

Good thinking, thanks!

No climbing in Honduras for me, just on extended travel. Basically traveling with 2 outfits to wear and a bunch of gear.

We’ve traveled to Asia, Europe, Latin America, and New Zealand/OZ and have never had any trouble with customs or security about the gear. I’m assuming that is what you meant because you mentioned no nut tool. And even that wouldn’t be a problem in a checked bag. I always take my rope as carry-on to avoid any chemical or heat issues, and sometimes do the same with soft goods.

I don’t check my climbing gear ever, rope/rack are always carry ons. I too have traveled extensively all over with climbing gear as a carry on without issue, but last winter I fished in Honduras on Roatan and dealt with the pickiest airline security I’ve ever dealt with. They kept stuff, tore my whole bag apart, ect. They were particularly interested in going thru/keeping my fishing gear which i found very strange given Roatans popularity to fly fisherman.

That is strange, sounds like they just wanted to steal your gear, but that’s pretty blatant.

Fly Fishing gear going through customs has much more to do with invasive species and such. If not, can you be more specific about what they kept and/or didn’t like with your fishing gear? Larger flies, particularly streamers, often raise attention, for example.

More looking for people who have flown out of coxen hole with nuts/cams/ropes than trying to talk about fishing gear.

I don’t think they were trying to steal from me as what they kept was small stuff and not valuable

I’m trying it either way so I’ll leave a follow up reply post CH departure

Just trying to determine context to better help answer your question….

Alright back in the US - here’s my follow up as promised

no issues with my bag containing cams(fingers-#5), nuts(no tool), QDs, a few slings and spare lockers

My girlfriends bag contained a 70, 10 slings, atc, a few lockers they gave her a hard time for the slings and lockers but after talking to a supervisor we were let thru

maybe this can help someone else on climb travel with some side adventures mixed in

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
