Took a flipper whipper off of By Gully on Castle Rock and whacked my head pretty good this morning. We couldn't tell from the base that the top section was completely covered in snow and I slipped off right below the chains.

We were able to recover all but a #2 at the upper roof. If someone is able to retrieve it so that I can give it back to my partner, I would be happy to repay with a 6-pack of your choosing.

Watch your step at the base, there's a nice pool of blood under the route now.

Update: Got away without stitches or a concussion, and made it back out to Castle Rock today to overcome some fear and save the cam from the booty gods.

Since you don't have to replace the cam, you can buy a helmet.

Thanks Jay. I do own a helmet and wear it.

Have you climbed the route?

It's a 6 inch offwidth, so unfortunately helmets aren't an option when leading.

Sorry I was snarky.  Glad you wear a helmet.  I have not climbed it and would not lead it if I couldn't wear a helmet.  But, I'm old and wear a helmet bouldering, so...

Glad you're okay, Be Young! Next time, try it with a helmet just for kicks and giggles. It can indeed be lead with one and is regularly done so.

Maybe once I'm as strong as you Adam! I wore a helmet to top rope the route and it was doable because I was way more willing to climb further outside the crack. When leading, I was crammed way in the back and couldn't move my head with it on.

Anyway, it doesn't matter how good my excuses are. I wasn't wearing a helmet and I fucked up, and very nearly paid a much higher price for that mistake. It has led to some deep reflections and some strategy changes for both me and my partner. I didn't think to post any details about those in a lost and found post, and perhaps that gave the impression that I was being flippant about helmets or safety in general. That couldn't be farther from the truth.

That's my post limit for the day. Be safe out there!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
