So I've finally exhausted my stock of Cascade picks for my 1st-gen Nomics that I stockpiled 15 years ago, after Petzl first intro'd the Ice pick which was vastly inferior for pure WI climbing. Consequently, I finally bought myself some Pur'Ice picks for the first time, expecting at least reasonably similar performance to the Cascades.
Instead I was shocked to find they still have issues with sticking and penetration in comparison to my one-swing-wonder Cascades. And my first laps were in pretty ideal conditions at Ouray.
So I'm wondering if anybody is tuning the stock Pur'Ices? And if so, how?
The tip is longer and steeper in comparison to the Cascades and the secondary teeth are slightly larger and less beveled, so I'm thinking increasing the bevel and decreasing the size of the secondaries will mitigate the sticking problems. But I can't figure out why the stock Pur'Ice tip has less first-swing penetration power than my filed-down Cascades, much less a stock Cascade.
Assuming the picks are well sharpened, my initial guess is that you are swinging your tools from too far away, which is causing the top bevel to impact the ice before the tip. Try swinging with your pommels as close to the ice as you can possibly get them (ensure that the tip makes first contact).
You could modify the leading edge to make it easier to swing from further away, but you will make the tip less durable. In my opinion, it is not necessary to modify the angle of the leading edge. The Beartooth picks have more open pick angles that might be better suited to your style than the Petzl picks.
