Mountain Project turns 20 this year!

Here’s to many more years of rocks and bickering. We’re a bit dysfunctional, but we’re also family. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to making this database such an invaluable resource for the climbing community. It’s made my climbing in New Mexico so much easier and I appreciate the time and effort everyone takes to continually improve it.

Mountain project is to climbing what google maps is to driving navigation. People did both before the internet, but both have made my life incredibly easier and better.

So that’s when all the climbing(locations).com sites merged to become MP?  Do you know when those sites started?  Sometime in the 90’s? I can’t remember that long ago….

To many more!

I started climbingmoab in 2001, and it was the first of the climbing*.com sites to really take off.  Climbingboulder was the original, and Myke started it in 2000 I think.  So sad that Myke passed away 5 years ago - way too young.

Congrats.  Time to "comb through the basement" and get rid of stuff.   Stupid old photos that are cluttering the site.

remember RC.noob

Neclimbs and Neice were pretty big here on the east coast for a good run but both fizzled out.  Neice re did their format and everyone lost their old sign in names and all of our content.  I never bothered registering again after that and it is pretty much gone  now..

When did ClimbingCentral.com start?   You, know the MN/WI/MI/southwest ONT scene, where real climbing and characters were highlighted ? :)

edit to the good Colonel:  after 21, like most people, maturity and boredom sets in.  Although some will always still post like a high schooler overserved at their first keg party.

Yeah, too little racism, misogyny, and bigotry to be ST.

Eric started that sometimes in the 90's, I was a frequent user in the early 2Ks.

The warbler made his way for a bit, did he not?

Anyone remember the answer to the question you had to answer to be able to create an account many years ago?

My account automatically transferred from the climbing Bay Area site to mountain project when the Quiter bros sold to them, so I’m not sure I ever saw the question.

MP is so old Matty Hong wouldn’t date it.

Now I understand why the forums are acting the way they are.

There's no reason you would or should understand the reference - it's a California-centric comment.  The Warbler is the nickname of Kevin Worrall, a CA-based climber who did a lot of hard (for the time) and bold (for any time) routes.  He was respected, or admired, or revered (depending on your fan-boy meter) and was for a while an active contributor to Supertopo:

He posted a ton of valuable info and history but was banned after one too many misogynistic posts. All his content disappeared along with him.   He joined MP under his real name for a while and was banned from here as well.  Whether he is posting here again under an alias I have no idea.

Happy Anniversary to Mountain Project.  I use almost no social media (only Facebook and MP) and don't follow any climbing media or info outside of what I glean from passing comments here on Mountain Project, or the stuff that bubbles up on my Facebook feed.  I get a lot of entertainment value from Mountain Project - there are some very funny people here.  And the routes database comes in quite handy for stuff that is not in guidebooks yet.

I appreciate the fact that it is moderated, love the ignore user feature, and find it valuable that the private messaging service actually works.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
