Does this look right? (Pick sharpening)

First time sharpening my tools and a friend offered to help. He insisted I needed to take off the first tooth even though I wasn’t too sure. Here’s what they look like and I’m just not convinced this is right. Could use some feedback from experienced sharpeners!

They just look so weirdly long and flat. idk. Is this actually ok? 

The first tooth off is pretty common especially on thicker picks but your friend sucks at sharpening tools
