Steepest Front Range Training Hikes
|
I’m looking for a steep trail to do pack carries on once per week, aiming for around 8k vert. In Washington I would do two laps on mailbox peak (4k gain over 2.5 miles) but I don’t think there is anything that tall or steep nearby? I’m based in Boulder but willing to drive a bit if there is something ideal for this purpose. I’m hoping to find something that is either fairly tall or has running water near the base so I can dump water at the top. Mt. Morrison looks suitable but I’d need to bring an extreme amount of water in my car for 4 laps. I’m not super familiar with the hiking around Boulder/the rest of the front range so sorry if I’m overlooking something obvious! |

So Mt. Sanitas in Boulder using the goat path is about 1,200 ft vert in 1.2 miles. 8k would require 6.6 laps and = ~8mi. There is a creek at the bottom. |

Bear Creek is right across the road from the Morrison trailhead if you needed to refill water. |

Mount Morrison Trail on is a go-to for Denver/Golden folks. https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/colorado/mount-morrison-south-ridge-trail?sh=wppgzy

Bear Peak via NCAR/Mesa Trail/Fern Canyon Trail. Been a while since I've done it but you do cross Bear Canyon Creek before things get steep. From the creek crossing it's 2350' and 1.72mi one way to the summit of Bear Peak. Mt. Morrison has some steeper sections, but Bear is maybe a little more consistently steep. https://caltopo.com/m/K8TGBN6 |

I was going to post Shadow Canyon, but yeah, Fern Canyon beats it. |

Say man, you got backcountry ski gear? It would be a lot cooler if you did. |
