Can someone please deal with this guy

How about a basic rule that you can't post until your account is 48 hours old or that it has to pass a captcha for the first 10 posts.

We are aware of the uptick in spam activity and aim to quickly put a solution in place to prevent this. Thanks for your patience.

Maybe for the time being just set it so users can only create one thread an hour. Or 2 threads in 24 hrs or something simple until another solution is in place.

How do I block any post that has the word t-e,m.u

amarius · · Nowhere, OK · Joined Feb 2012 · Points: 20

Here is what I find strange - I don't see any Temu posts in the "For Sale" forum

Why not just automatically ban any new account that makes a post containing the word “temu” or “CBD?” No real person would start an account and immediately make a post about one of those two things, and it seems like at least half of the bot posts mention one of those two things.

I usually scroll MP with my morning coffee. I opened it today and just said “nope”. I’m not looking for real posts amongst all that mess.

Y’all limit successive replies for actual discussions by people but not incessant spam from bots? Come on now. Do your jobs.

Mountain project used to immediately hide any thread marked as spam but apparently does not anymore.

You should see some improvement now, but we'll also continue to monitor and adapt.

I'm going to go ahead and say your fix, failed.

Thank you for working on this, but it does look like quite a few spam posts are still making it through, and remaining up after being flagged. Is this increase in spam caused solely by an increase in bots/spam posters, or was there a change in the code/policy implemented immediately preceding this surge? I seem to remember that flagging used to immediately remove spam posts, and it no longer does.
It seems like there are several different potential solutions that could be implemented, any one of which should work to stop these posts. Ban any account by a new user mentioning one of the following four words:

Temu

CBD

Keto

Gummies.

The code to do this should be simple. No real person is going to make their first ever post about one of those four things (and if they are, we don’t need them haha).

Another suggestion is that if one or multiple long-term members flag a post by a new user, that post should be removed/hidden and the account should lose posting privileges immediately, then be banned after review.

Prevent someone from making more than two new threads per day. I’m fairly active on MP and don’t think I’ve ever even made two threads in a single day. 5+ threads by a single brand new account is ridiculous.

It would be nice to have a bit more communication about what has changed to cause this surge in spam and what specifically is being done to address it (unless this is being kept hidden so that the spammers won’t be able to exploit it and more rapidly adapt to it, in which case you could still share that reasoning with us). Thanks for all of the effort in addressing this, I’m sure this is annoying for you guys as well, and I don’t mean to be overly critical.

Edit: Looks like the spam posts were taken down while I was typing, there were at least 5 that had been up for longer than 10 minutes when I started, none now.

How long before that list expands to hundreds/thousands of words?

The code would be more complex than that if it is to be robust and scalable.

This would be  easily as annoying as the current post limit.

5+ threads by a single brand new account is ridiculous.

Possibly but it's not unheard of.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
