Oddly Specific: 20-ish liter pack that can be a plane personal item + do well on multipitch?

In case you all are curious, I think I’m going with the Wadi. Fits all the criteria, and won out over the Petzl Bug because of the larger size, even though I like the Bug outer pocket more and the compression straps for rope stabilizing purposes. Thanks all for the suggestions!

Just fyi, Simond is one of the first manufacturers of climbing equipment anywhere, an OG, if you will. 1860 I think they started making ice axes/alpenstocks. They’ve since dropped from being one of the premier manufacturers but they still make solid stuff at a reasonable price. Not always the flashiest but they get the job done right.

Simond was bought by Decathlon (largest sporting goods retailer in the world) in 2008. Quechua is one of their brands as well. Agreed that Decathlon's goal is to make decent stuff at the lowest possible price. Not much of an US presence - only online sales. They have tried to have US brick and mortar a couple of times but it didn't work out.

For reference regarding your 20ish liter target I’ve flown all over the world with my tnf phantom 38. It’s usually packed, Fanny pack added as a “brain” and fly rod case on the side. Has made it in countless overheads, no issues.

Personal item, not carry on. Under the seat, not the overhead.

Probably unpopular answer but I have done many many MPs with REI Flash 22

I’ve used the Bug for your same scenario and thought it worked really well.

Blue ice wadi 22 fits the bill. I've owned a BD speed 22, MHW scrambler 35, and Blue Ice wadi 15, and for everything you listed I'd pick the blue ice.

I've tried several times in the last year to figure out how to buy Simond products in the US. As far as I can tell, Decathlon is not selling any Simond products in the US, even online. I'd love to see this change. I think they make some great stuff for the money. Their Sprint series alpine packs, and Makalu assault tent are some of the best for the money in their class.

I don’t really want to try to cram 38L under the seat and fit my legs there, and either way - I’m looking for something particularly about 20-25L, so this is not a useful suggestion.

Crazy, yeah I had never even heard of them. Admittedly if I had only come across their site with no other knowledge, I wouldn’t have even thought it was legit.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
