Having never climbed Fishook Arete nor having stood on the summit of Mt Russell I can confidently assert that anchor needs some improvement!

The bolts would have been fine if they were connected vertically to a single fixed point via chains

Hopefully the chain could be about 4,000 feet long, too.

I like the fact that the OP has gotten a week-long-how-to-plan-for-alpine-epics seminar from very qualified commentators for the price of a slice of humble pie. God bless those willing to comment.

As for me, my first stuck rope was on Bishop's Terrace because I was (am) too new to recognize why I shouldn't use mid-chain-links haphazardly for rappel set-ups. Took alot of pulling.

Agreed. Furthering the epic by suggesting they walk off is bad advice in my opinion.

Darkness would certainly make it difficult but again this is a descent that is ascended by people who aren’t climbers (Vegas hikers and scrambling club or whatever). It’s extremely well cairned.

OP should’ve locked the thread after the first twenty people gave him solid advice. Such an amusing read! Kudos to you for having a knife to cut your rope with, and for getting down safely. There’s so much wisdom in this thread to behold. In summary though, Cat in the Hat needs a chain anchor about as badly as RR needs more traffic from trad climbing YouTube graduates.
