Tommy Deuchler Dead
|
DLFA hardman Tommy has passed, a pioneer of crazy leads at DL. I’m sure there are some stories to tell!??? |
|
Sorry to hear about Tommy passing on. To say he was an interesting character is putting it mildly. For some of us when we were in our rebellious youth he inspired us to climb hard. There are plenty of stories climbing and otherwise. RIP Tommy D. |
|
I'll remember fondly the countless hours we all spent sitting at the campfire outside Tommy's Heroin Grove trailer, listening to him hold forth on an ever-surprising array of topics. An acerbic wit, keen mind, and extemely well read. And a hell of a climber. RIP Tommy. |
|
RIP. I've been meaning to get back on some of his routes at Taylor's. Great contributions to the area. |

For those that want to know more: The D.L.F.A (Devil's Lake Fuckness Association) movie (2013) snort cuts can be found via some internet googling, but is no longer available online. So, figure it out and watch it somehow, somewhere. |

Darin is remastering the film and plans to upload it to a free sharing site soon. If anyone can’t wait, send me a PM and I’ll get you a digital copy. Rip Tommy |

chris tregge wrote: I just found out last week about his passing, via a post on FB informing me of the gathering at Devils Lake in the afternoon of June 10th. I never traveled to climb with him for the 'big stories', but enjoyed many years at the Lake climbing with him and other 'clubbers'. Took many a great pic of Tommy on quartzite routes of the East Bluffs. Many taken on his first ascent of 'All the Way', the feature topic by Darrin for the DLFA movie. Several of them are still here on Mountain Project, in that secret 'route' folder for the East Ramparts. I do hope to be somewhat healed from my upcoming late May cancer surgery, and intend to get up to the Lake on June 10th to join others. |

Tommy’s memorial was this past weekend. Really wonderful weekend with lots of folks making the journey to honor him. |

RIP… I had the pleasure to work and climb with Tommy circa 1993-95. Whether harvesting apples at Ski Hi or climbing at Devil’s Lake, Tommy had a knack for hand-rolling cigarettes, drinking beer, and recounting story after story. I’m sure there were plenty of stories shared at his send off. - Bobby |

Tommy mentored many young climbers including me, Rudy Rudotis (Jim Rudolph). Whether it was our 1st ascent of the Cathedral Point in the Beartooth range, our cross country hitchhiking adventures, our Hollywood and Vine ascent of the Devils Tower, or climbing 17 stories up the Pillsbury building in winter, you could always count on Tommy for a good time. I miss you Tommy, and thank you for all you did to help me when I was young. Hoop-Hoop! |
|
I remember you Rudy, along with Rob Lemon, probably the first two c'lubbers' I met at the lake back in '77' during the 'glory days' of the DLFA pumping out the most wild routes that were seldom tried by the lower class of climbers who wandered the cliffs. Tommy was above special, in his ability but especially in his spirit and great story telling. Will always miss his presence. |

Tommy was a great friend to my family including my father, Pete Cleveland. Tommy would actually be entrusted to babysit my sister and I when we were really little. Imagine that! While he had a unique sense of humor, he was really a good and, yes, trustworthy, person. He'll be missed by all that knew him. Hoop hoop! |
