Rainier or Baker/Shuksan

Small group of us looking to do either Rainier 6 day expedition course via Emmons route or a private Baker & Shuksan 7 day trip with technical skills on Baker and again the day between Baker and Shuksan. We have all been at much higher altitudes several times so altitude is not an issue. Which of the two options is best for true skills learning? Better scenery? Better overall experience? Etc... We do not live on west coast and probably will not be back for awhile as we have some future trips abroad we want to do next. So we want the best overall experience/learning that we can get out there. Would love thoughts from those who have done them. Thanks in advance!

Shuksan will probably give you more experience with alpine rock as you climb the summit pyramid. Otherwise, I imagine the courses will be about the same.

For true skills learning, I’d recommend the Rainier 6-day expedition via Emmons. It offers great technical challenges like glacier travel and crevasse rescue, with fewer crowds. While Baker and Shuksan have stunning scenery, Rainier’s conditions provide a more immersive learning experience.

There's plenty of Glacier travel on both Baker and Shuksan. If the technical skills are the standard glacier travel stuff like self-arresting and crevasse rescue, there will be no difference between where they're offered. If the technical skills are climbing related, Baker and Shuksan offers more. Climbing the Northridge of Mt. Baker offers WI3, and Shuksan offers plenty of 4th and low 5th class rock requiring rock pro that you'll be doing in boots and crampons. Also, there's no way Baker and Shuksan will be more crowded than Rainier.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
