I'm new to mountaineering and looking forward to learning the sport. anyway are there any good routes in the missions mountains which would be good first climbs? Are there any that would be good intermediate climbs? Say any to set a goal. When is the best time of year to climb there? I'm looking at the West ridge of sheepshead, what do you guys think?
As with anything it’s good to build up incrementally. I haven’t climbed w ridge of sheepshead but the missions are pretty difficult mountains to move around in generally and any snow/ice route there will be safer in the spring. I’d want to be comfortable on single pitch ice and maybe have some steeper snow experience/avalanche and snow science knowledge before attempting much in those mountains.
The bitterroot definitely has some more approachable mountain routes imo. Most things mid winter are going to necessitate skis and the missions and bitterroots are filled with wonderful ski lines, of which there’s a little more beta available than the technical ice and snow.
I guess it comes down to what general experience you have in the mountains and what your snow and ice skills are like if that’s the terrain you’re looking at.
