Happy new year everyone. Keep on keeping on. |

Brandt Allen wrote: You are correct… I’m just saying learn how to do the lifts correctly, some machines let you develop bad habits. Lori… hook up with Brandt to go weight lifting. Kris and I would do a 90 day program every winter. It pays off |

When I started climbing seriously with Kris we also started going to the gym. He honestly could not bench press the bar (45 pounds). That changed quickly. We would work out so hard it was hard to pick your arms up to hold the steering wheel to drive home. Dumbbells are your friend. Happy New Year all! |

Happy and healthy New Year for everyone, especially so for those suffering from illness or misfortune or caring for loved ones in such situations. |

Best wishes to everyone for a great new year. Thanks to all for the inspiration to keep on keeping on! |

Happy New Year to you all!! I'll say that if '25 goes as well as '24 has, I'll have nothing to complain about. I don't say this to bragg, many of my recent years have not been good, with neurological issues derailing all of my best efforts to get out and do stuff. But unlike the rest of you, who seem to be falling apart , I've been given a respite. Of course the other shoe will drop one day, but for now I'm good. I attribute my current sense of well being to my decision, in 2007, to do the course work to become a Balanced Body University certified Pilates teacher and sticking with that practice like religion, and to dive deep into Yoga. That, and finally challenging the doctors to get me off of the heavy pharmaceuticals I was taking to allegedly control seizures. But that's another story. So, here are a couple pics of the house from the day before Christmas, early morning light... Nick, note that we have a temp railing there. Your story about your friend walking off the edge without one made me wince. Talk about an "Oh Shit" moment. Guy mentioned a 24" thick concrete floor in Barbara's gym. 12" with rebar is more than sufficient. She continues to amaze me. At 67 she keeps getting stronger. No, she doesn't do roids. She has a USPA Nationals comp coming up, and she's going in with a reliable 300 squat, 250 bench, and 425 deadlift. And since she has been consistent over the years at bringing in personal best in competition, this one might be a masters record breaker (not the first for her). It's interesting how different Barbara's and my approaches to fitness are. The only thing we have in common is diet. I'll go to her gym and she has the bar loaded for a 400 lb deadlift. I can't pick up one end of that bar. She'll pull it up like a human hydraulic press. But I can get up off the floor no hands every time. She won't get down on the floor. But we're both strong and healthy and I pray that this goes on for the next year. And the same for all of you geezers here on this forum. I don't post here much, but I lurk and I love you all. Best wishes and godspeed in 2025!! |

Kristian, where is this house being built - if you don’t mind me asking. Beautiful area. |

Looking good, Kris! The interior photo with the beautiful wooden beams is especially nice. |

Brandt Allen wrote: Thanks Brant. That upper floor will have a couple rooms, a bath, and a generous balcony looking over the big room. Except for the bath, which will have a lid on it, the ceilings will be open to see the timber frame trusses. |

Happy New Year to all my Over 50 friends See you out there soon! |

I’ll add my Happy New Year message as well, to all the “mature” folks on this thread. I lurk a lot and don’t always have time to contribute, but I have thoroughly enjoyed the conversations. Thanks! |

HAPPY 2025! I'm ready for the laughing gas Time is a train
I did not think at 71 years old that I would be talking about barbell training and climbing. I did not think that my list of projects this year would include climbing some routes that are more suitable for a 25 year-old. So my biggest challenge here is to get rid of the number.(age) I take seriously the advice and wisdom shared here. Thank you, Jan for affirming the benefit of weightlifting. By the way, Brandt I have the book and I will be looking for a trainer and I’m happy to share. Kris, your mention of Pilates and Yoga… I know how transformative they have been for you, I’m just trying to find a rhythm here to fit them all in. I can no longer get up off the floor and I’m stronger than I’ve ever been. So there must be something about adding muscle without adding flexibility. I really liked my Pilates instructor and I let that fall away with Tony’s situation. I’ll give her a call this week. But maybe what I’m thinking this morning on the first day of 2025 is let’s go! What the hell. We are all still here. The only battle is an an interior one. It’s a real discipline to remain positive in today’s world.. I think we’re collectively up for it. —- I got out with Bob yesterday. If I had an outdoor gym, it would be King Dome. This season I was able to do one lap on the easiest route, I bumped it up to two laps last week, three laps yesterday. But I have to say that last lap was a slug fest and this morning I’m not happy.

Happy new year. Kris, I am always the guy who puts up the temp railing on jobs. Seen and had to many close calls. |

Lori Milas wrote: "Slug fest." That seems like a good word with which to start the new year. I'm at Pinnacles for the next six or seven days doing a mix of routes and guidebook photos. We're going to The Stronghold today - I've got a 10d to redpoint. Our approach hike goes past one of my favorite, most gorgeous places in the park that isn't on a trail. As always though I miss my wife and dogs. A lot. This is when Vicki says to me: "Yeah, yeah. But how can I miss you if you won't go away?" |
