Traveling to Devils Tower From East Coast

Good Morning, I hope you're well if you're reading this.

My partner and I plan to knock off a classic or two at the tower this coming spring. Question is, how do we get there without spending a grand on a flight? Im thinking rolling into denver and driving north is probably easiest, we're coming out of philly most likely.

What say you oh wise dirt bags of the west?

Any advice for timing the trip is welcome as well. This is for my 40th birthday in late april but could be pushed later in the year if that's advisable as far as conditions for a better trip up the tower.

Thanks in advance for any tips from your beast coast dirt bag bros.

Weather wise late April can be a crap shoot. Could be nice, could be snowing. Denver to the Tower is 6 hours away so you waste a day on both ends driving plus gas. You can fly into Rapid City via Minneapolis. Rapid City is only 90 minutes away. Flights can be found for well under $1k.

Don’t go in June, voluntary closure.

Devil’s Tower Lodge is about as good as it gets for access and climber friendly!

The rock dries fast.

There are about 360 routes encircling the tower, pick the degree of fun you seek.

If you are going via Rapid City, by all means stop off in the Needles in the Black Hills and do some climbs there too.

I'll second both Allen and Rich on this. On one occasion I flew from Boston to Rapid City, was picked up by my partner who was already out on an extended road trip, after spending time in the Rushmore Needles, we then continued on to the Tower for several days. Another ' on the way there' option in the Black Hills is the limestone sport climbing in Spearfish Canyon.

As for time of year, I'd also suggest waiting until May for a greater likelihood of better weather ( though I did once loose a day there that month due to snow). As stated above, avoid June out of respect for Native American sentiments.

I bet you can get there pretty cheap in a Prius. In my day the cheap option was a Honda Civic.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
