Ray Olson-North Deerhorn

Hey everyone! I had posted about putting together a guidebook for North Deerhorn in a different forum but thought I would start a new thread. I am reaching out because I really want to put a good effort into putting out an inspiring and accurate guidebook. The history of Deerhorn is quite literally “lost in time” and my hopes are to document this interesting and niche corner of the lore that is San Diego Climbing. I want to offer the opportunity for anyone who has pictures of North Deerhorn to be included in the book! If you have some rad action shots, scenery, etc., and would like to share them I would love to include them where I can. However, I am not looking for any pictures to license. I definitely want to give credit and add as many as possible! Email me if you’re interested! (please include the Full name of the photographer, subjects, or/and route name) In the last forum, I mentioned looking for Greg Epperson and I got some information, but still haven’t pursued it just yet. If you have any information I still would love to hear it! Besides the information of the photo of Ray, I will also attach photos I found on the internet (Photobucket) of what I assume is Ray Olson Climbing and other activities. I really would appreciate any background information and permission to use it! I also understand that some of the photos would be hard to know if it is in fact Ray unless you took the picture. So please consider reaching out if you have any info. Thanks! |

Thanks for sharing the photos, Kyle. Appreciate the trail work you’re doing at DH and look forward to your guidebook. And thanks Terry for linking the Zine article about Ray. Haven’t gotten my hands on that copy before. A heavy read. RIP. |

These photos posted were found on a simple google search and I don't have the confidence that these pictures are in fact of Ray. I know the climber in Joshua Tree isn't Ray, however, it is supposedly his red truck in the background. Ray was known to sell his harnesses, chalk bags, etc., out of the back of his truck in Josh. The photos I am most suspect of, are the ones of him in La Jolla and the two more modern shirtless photos that appear to be some San Diego Rock. As I had mentioned before, please consider reaching out to provide background and insight into these photos! Thanks! Email: Kyleheaveyoutdoors@gmail.com |

It looks like Werner, Merry (sp?) and Pete T. with the guy in the tanktop. |

UPDATE: North Deerhorn Climbing Guidebook Hello all! I am nearing the end of completing this guide for this amazing area! Thanks to everyone who donated, climbed, and broke new ground in this area; I have been able to compile over 200 pages of route topo's, maps, and general information on North Deerhorn. I am currently wrapping up detailed editing as well as adding couple of routes I need more info on. As for when it is complete and ready for sale I am projecting to be ready to print in mid-November the latest! I have a site set up for access to purchase, but wanted to get a good number of who wanted to get a Guidebook first before I share the link. I wanted to just see initial interest so I can get an idea of how many to have made, at least for the first round of orders. There will also be shirts and stickers for purchase and will be found on the site where you can also purchase the book. Free shipping will be applied to any Shirt or Sticker on orders over $80! If your interested in purchasing one or more please email me with your quantity at: Kyleheaveyoutdoors@gmail.com |
