I was interested in climbing The diagonal on wallface this December. Wondering what conditions would be like. Never been up in the dacks during winter months. Will I have to deal with a decent amount of snow, how cold should I expect it to be? Does the wall get good Sun?
I would love to climb some harder routes but if conditions are too burly I would rather have a chill time on the diagonal.
It is really hard to anticipate actual conditions this far in advance, and even more so in these unpredictable days of climate change. Also, since December is a bit of a 'transitional' month, there is often quite a difference in conditions between the early and later parts of the month. Normally, though, one can expect there to be at least some, and potentially much, snow on the approach ( and the amount will have a large impact on the effort required to get from the trail to the base--not easy in even the best of conditions) and cold temperatures, but not yet a good build up of ice ( for the upper pitches of Diagonal). My visit there was in February--we had to ski ( my partner) and snowshoe (me) in--I don't recall the trail being 'packed down' by previous visitors. It was definitely a thrash to get to the base, and significant amounts of snow on the Diagonal ramp slowed us sufficiently to thwart our attempt at about 2/3 of the way up ( we weren't prepared to bivvy). We were climbing reasonably well at the time and definitely didn't find the route to be at all 'casual' in the conditions that we encountered---likely not unusual ones.
Edit to add: Also don't forget to account for how short the days are up there in December--it can be a significant factor in pulling off an ascent.
