Is there a trick to remove the toe bails, or is it necessary to just muscle them off?

Petzl recommends putting theirs sideways on the ground and looping a strap around the bail wire to pull on.

Swearing and elbow grease.

Good recipe for hurting yourself.

Follow Alexander's suggestion:
Basket hitch a runner (or the strap off the heel bail) to the side of the toe bail to give you something to pull on. They'll pop right off. Easy peasy.

Using a large flathead screwdriver to lever the bail in and out works.
