What gear to setup toprope at planet of the apes?

I have sport climbing stuff: rope, lockers, draws, slings, helmets...

The MP pages says:

> There are many sets of bolted anchors on the summit. Most are about 10 feet from the cliff, so be prepared with anchor gear to keep your climbing rope from scraping on the top of the wall.

I don't have any static rope or cordalette. I think I need a cordalette? Or maybe two, so I don't fall off while setting up?

I'm not going to just go there by myself and guess at how to do it. I will bring someone with me, or there will be 100 people already there to talk to. I just want to know what stuff to bring ahead of time.

any specific suggestions for cordalette and static line to have in the kit is appreciated

There are plenty of ways to extend a master point over the edge, some better than others. You could tether a bunch of slings/draws together from each bolt to extend the master point over the edge, if you want to use what you already have. This method is a little silly looking and ever so slightly increases accident (carabiner gate opening / sling wear / approaching the edge untethered) but the likelihood of that is relatively minimal. My standard kit is a static line (50ft to 150ft), a grigri, and a rappel device. I'll link a video below that provides an excellent example of what I normally do. The best part is that you're tethered into something at all times, so the safety of the system overall is pretty high.

How to rig a system like this really depends on what what your goals are. If you're just going to be top roping stuff like this on the rare occasion, you can get away with MacGyver-ing the system a little bit. If you find yourself frequently at crags where protection at the top is far from where you want your master point, then a static line is almost considered an essential part of your kit. Hope my 2¢ helps.

3 regular and 2 locking carabiners and a 30 foot 8mm or larger section of climbing rope will easily work to set up any anchor for top roping on the Apes Wall. You need to know how to equalize the 3 bolts being clipped and have the knowledge on how to tie a munter hitch and figure eight knot. Bring a 50 m rope to clip through the 2 opposing locking carabiners hanging over the summit edge so the rope runs smoothly.

Please don’t throw your rope down at this location, lower it since people are likely below including non climbers.

Tarvis…. A bunch of 1 inch nylon webbing is cheap. You need about 30 feet. As Dave mentioned, some locking biners and regular biners (6) are required. A whole bunch of friendly climbers go there regularly, go up and look at thier setups. If needed ask for assistance. Also offer up the use of your TR to others- it’s quite common to arrive and find every root occupied. Just ask if you can take a run. I suggest you start way left.
Oh yes, a great idea is to stay anchored while organizing your TR set up.

And as mentioned above- don’t toss your rope off. I watched someone toss thier rope off while still in the rope bag! Hit hard on a 6 year old kid- required emergency personnel. Don’t do that.

Have fun

I appreciate it

but also when people say "1 inch nylon webbing" on here, new people don't know what that means specifically. Like from home depot?

Go there on a weekend and just offer belay/beer/candy/etc to climb on whoever already has the TRs rigged for the day. I doubt the routes will be open for very long and instead of people moving gear (anchor and rope), you just swap routes like you're at the gym.

Do not buy climbing equipment from HD, by the way.

No …. From a climbing shop. REI in Northridge has it.

Matt…. The ever present LEO’s might not be cool with beer in thier park.
