Do you mean Upland or Joshua Tree?

Either way, the prior occupants may not appreciate seeing the numerous improvements made once released from prison in a decade or two?

Just kidding, Lori. MM’s watched too many Breaking Bad episodes.

I'd say ask Russ about that but he got kicked off for being too honest

I miss Russ’ hostility.  It’s kind of suspicious when everyone just gets along.     I wish he would come back.

Guy, thanks for that positive thought. I have thought this too. I will stay with that.

Regarding you guys on the protein train… good for you! I’m working hard to get this right because I would not normally just eat 120 g. Having to keep it mostly dairy- free makes it harder. If I could just drink a half gallon of milk or have daily whey shakes that would be pretty cool.

Stay with it y’all and keep reporting how it’s going.(I had read and heard the casein study.). 2.2 gallons of water? That’s impressive!  I’m Really trying to make it a gallon a day here but continually filling up a water glass a big hassle.  Tips???

Everything aside, this summer couldn’t be more perfect. I woke up in the middle of the night thinking “what if I just lowered myself down that boulder” instead of taking a chance with scooting?  It worked so well!

However, I have found 1000 ways that don’t work but still not found the one way that does work to grain surgery. I’m going to be very embarrassed when/if I do head back to it again with Bob. Obviously we made it there once. But I really want to do this myself!

One very cool thing I’m taking as a sign. I looked up from my rappelling to see White Room, plain as day. It’s gonna happen, I just know it.

I’m going to remember these long days of play and watermelon and afternoon movies. Such a short time ago I had a desk job. How about everybody else? What was your previous life?

Phylp…. Thanks for sharing your story. Gives me hope, as I sit here looking out over the sort of reconstructed kitchen, for the future.

Personally all this home remodeling is getting very old- right now I’m trying to hook up a backsplash for a vanity the wife fell in love with and ordered off of the “internet”… only problem, this one was to large, by .5 inch and didn’t come with a matching backsplash like all the others did. So what matches with “grey granite”????

Being Thursday that means Stony Point at sundown. Looking forward for that.

My poor darling husband is having some medical issues so I am housebound for a while.  Wish I could get out climbing but it's more important to take care of him.  Managed a day on Sunday in the gym with Sam, but I probably can only do day trips for a while. Thank God for the internet for social/climbing contact!

Greys can be purple-grey, blue-grey, green-grey, brown-grey etc.  Greys are very very hard to really "match".  Depending on what other metal finishes you are using, you could go with metal backsplash.  Another option that is pretty inexpensive is a thick opaqued glass over paint.  That gives quite a nice look.  When all else fails, a true white will work with most greys.

Our remodeling 10 years ago took almost every room down to the studs. Here are a few photos for you Guy:

Before -

front entry hall looking to living room - very 80s with sunken area and pillars, kitchen closed off behind wall on right rear

looking into kitchen

During -

living room demo

dining room demo- the plastic on the right edge is the entire wall that came down from mold and to convert from bay window to flat windows.

Going to the gym for a very hours.  It was 106 here yesterday, slightly cooler today.

Phlyp, is 'the gym' there still Hanger 18 in Upland? I went there a few times while visiting our daughter when she was in Scripps. The first time I was there was when we were dropping her off to start her first year. It was 105 outside and I was amazed that a gym in SoCal didn't have air-conditioning!!!I did not last very long. Having AC is virtually a necessity for a gym to survive here in the Northeast, though Tuesday evening the heat and humidity were too much even for our gyms system to make much difference.

Hope your husband recovers quickly.

Phylp… I hope it’s nothing to serious…at our age you do get some unplanned downtime.

The best part of all this remodeling is together time ….. shopping at all the stores.

Your home and mine both look like shrines to the 80s… love your sunken “living room”…. Did you have a disco ball?

Later all

@Brad… sounds like you take care of business the right way. When sport climbing started I was dead set against cheating (rap bolting). Then I realized that if the end result was a good climb it’s ok. It’s allowed all this choss to be developed. What I really dislike are climbs that were TRed to death then bolted to be “bold”…

I have always been curious about the Pinnacles maybe time for a visit- this fall maybe

Guy, I know Pinnacles really, really, really well. If you do decide to go, maybe contact me. I'm still working on the guidebook and could show you around some (better routes only very likely?) while I do field checking and take photos for the book. Because I've got to tromp all over different places in the park, you could learn a bit about the place. And I always need people in my photos if possible. Aren't you a famous guidebook model?

I told a friend that I had read that remodeling was very stressful to a relationship. He said " That's why I don't do any house projects... I don't want to risk my marriage".

Thanks J Westgate and all you other nice people for the good wishes.  It's a ruptured disk.  The oral steroids didn't help and he's scheduled for a epidural for next Friday.  Our orthopedic surgeon/back doc, who is a great guy, is on vacation this week, and god bless him, he deserves it.  All HCPs of all types are stretched so thin these days. In the meantime, excruciating nerve pain. I'd take him to the ER but a) I have a feeling they'd say, it's just pain, it's not an emergency, b) he doesn't trust an overworked ER doc stranger to inject a needle into his spinal cord.

Re the sunken pit! Yeah, that got filled in.  The odd lowered coved ceiling in the dining area got raised to the level of the other ceilings.  Walls were removed, support beams installed etc.

Here's the aftermath:

Al, yes indeed there is a Hanger 18 climbing gym 10 minutes down the hill from me but I never go there.  It's one of the original SoCal gyms.  The walls are quite short and they compensate by making everything bouldery.  If I did bouldery routes outside, that would be fine training, but I tend to do everything but that style.  I go to the Sender One gyms or the Touchstone gym in Pasadena, where the walls are up to 55 feet tall and I can train the kind of things I need to train. Locally, this is the gym I'm at down the hill a few times a week:

That’s a long drive!

The hangar 18 near you is pretty good,  but agree the walls aren’t tall enough.

Hope your husband gets his epidural soon, if you’re going LAX or Pasadena, LMK. I can join you!

Nice space, Phylp! I like the openness.
We just got done with a kitchen remodeling. I told my wife to take care of everything. :) I just wrote the checks, and made sure the electrical stuff got done properly.

55-foot walls!  Wow.  I wish we have that around us.  44 ft max here.  And that is a maybe.  40m rope just nice for Touchstone?

55 foot walls are bigger than most of the routes I do In Joshua Tree.

Sender One, Torch is about 60 feet tall. Routes are longer, but at a negative incline.

Touchstone isn’t that high.

I stand corrected.

I climbed at Hangar 18 in Upland  a few years ago. One of the managers , Isaac Bout , would let me in for free because he figured anyone my age who could still climb fairly hard probably deserved it. My gym partner was a dude by the name of Sam Olivas. After a good session we would convene at a craft brewery in the old town just a short walk away. Good times. A huge shout out to Sam, or Isaac, or some others we once climbed with there.

60 ft.  Yummy.
Is negative incline = slab or negative incline = overhung?  Lead routes?

Overhang. Yes, last time I was there it was lead only on that feature. It goes from -20 to - 40 degrees. The gym requires a 60m+ rope to lead.

Turkey Leg has a roof feature.

The boulder problems are stiffer relative to the climbs there, and definitely a challenge.

Donald, agree with you! Hangar 18 in Upland is a great place!

Phylp, Stronghold is a good option as well, not quite as long a drive as LAX. Many auto-belay. The Post is where most of my lead partners climb.
