Mount Woodson Mega Thread

Hi all, It was brought to my attention that some of the information that I included in my map has been accidentally put on the internet publicly and was not actually meant for public sharing. Cheers, Philipp |

This is amazing Phillip- thank you! Just what I needed to help me find my way around Woodson. |
Ok. Map is back up, with the info that wasn't meant to be shared removed! |
Phillip, thanks for all the info! Really appreciate it! |
Philipp, this is incredible! |

Just stopped by to share some photos of Hard & Soul (5.12hard), and the route next to it ~ Battle of Urushiol (5.10b) ~ which is now also open for business after lots and lots of poison oak and dirt removal thanks to Michael! Hard and Soul: Battle of Urushiol: |

Philipp Arndtwrote: Awesome pics and cool looking routes! Way to battle the PO and the heat. Donning the required PPE in the summer is no easy task |
Nice one Philipp and friends. Look forward to visit this rock! |
No PPE needed for me :D I seem to be insensitive to the stuff, I still haven't had a reaction. I do take cold showers and laundry my clothing afterwards just in case, but it seems good so far. I'm open for business -- happy to clean any particularly nasty spots on people's trails or climbs... for a price. (the price is beer, friendship, and belays) |

Fantastic job Philipp! |

Learning cave chimney says it has two bolts for anchors https://www.mountainproject.com/route/124290991/the-learning-cave-chimney Photos show someone using an extended gear anchor and I can't quite see the bolts. Can anyone tell me if the bolt anchor is near the edge and can be used with a standard sized sling or if it needs to be extended via static line, and approximately how long it should be extended? Thank you in advance! |
Hey Michael, there is a bolted anchor you can use, and it should be fine with a typical quad. It will run over the edge a bit, but the edge is rounded and you don't need to bring a rope protector. Generally the descriptions should be more up to date than the photos (we would often take pics while still developing). If you've got time, make sure to check out Pacman and Battle of Urushiol; we put in a lot of work on that trail and those routes, and they need more traffic! The other routes in the area are also very cool but a fair bit harder. |

Michael Sandlerwrote: Thank you for the info on the learning cave bolts. Do Pacman or Urushiol have walkups for accessing the bolts? I am not a trad leader but I would be happy to give them toprope traffic if I could. |

Yeah, all the routes with bolted anchors in the northern territories have easy walk-ups, except for trunk tribute (for this one you'd need to climb the tree). Also, Plutonacious would be a moderate sport route in the area. Learning cave chimney anchor looks like this: |

New stuff looks rad Philipp and Michael!! Cant wait to get up there again once it cools off. We spent a nice hot day over at South Woodson today, so many gems over there. Much respect to all of the OG Trail cutters over there. This thing on the summit was amazing. I believe its called "Gangster Lean" Which is a great name for it. Came across a rattler on the hike back down. Excited for Woodson season to start back up. |

Michael Sandlerwrote: We visited LC today and were able to put some time in on Pacman as well! I didn't get the send on either of them but I had a lot of fun. TY for the routes and trails. |

B Donovanwrote: This is really cool, especially because my favorite time to climb at Woodson is after sundown, when the heat disappears and the tarantulas come out. My personal favorite name for it is what a small boy called it in agony as his parents dragged him up to the summit to snap a photo on the potato chip, “Dorito Cheese Mountain.” |

Wow, this is an awesome thread. I spent a year or so ditching class and schwacking around Woodson south looking for lost routes (and did a hammer ascent of K2s aid line along the way). Also had some forays onto the north escarpment of the main hill by myself; I'd love to go back there now given all the work that's been done since I was out there. If anyone wants to go exploring... I'm pretty much immune to poison oak at this point. Not kidding. |

Has Mystery Bolt always had two lead bolts, or was a second bolt added recently? |

We've been wondering about this corner situated in the middle of the south slope for a while and decided to make the trek down to it from the summit the other day. We first check out this crack filled with dead poison oak vines at the summit antennas. We cleared the PO and it turned out to be a really fun little climb. 5.8 or so. Worth a quick lap if you're visiting the Crucible. Didn't seem like it had been climbed before but its right off of the road. We then made the trek down to our destination and it turned out to be pretty cool but definitely not worth the major bushwhack it took to get down to it. Has anyone climbed this one before? We didn't see any evidence of prior climbing. 5.6 or so We ended up bushwhacking down to the Warren Canyon trail exiting Rexrodes and walked back to the cars via the road. A huge day that scratched the itch of whether this corner was any good. Happy Woodsoneering! |
