Yo yo yo mp! I’m starting to lead trad routes and am in the springs for the summer and just curious if anyone knows any solid places to practice placing gear in the 5.6-5.8 range within 90 minutes ish of the springs? Where’d you all learn to climb trad stuff here?

Turkey Rocks comes to mind. It’s about 60 minutes from the springs and has several classic 5.7s. Lots of good opportunities to practice gear along the base and many of the climbs can be backed up when practicing by scrambling up and around and setting up a top rope (just make sure you have gear and know how to build a natural anchor - no bolts at Turkey Ricks). The only downside is the last few miles drive in is vastly aided by a vehicle with a bit more clearance. It’s passable but most anything but I wouldn’t want to take a sedan in.

If you want some short routes with top rope anchors, I can also recommend Duncan’s Ridge along Horsetooth Reservoir outside Ft Collins. Easy access, glue in top bolts that you place at the top before scrambling down so you can practice on top rope and then take a run on the pointy end. I live in Ft Collins, so if you take this route hit me up and I can join you and give any tips/placement feedback you might be interested in.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
