DOGS!
|
I've never owned a dog, but one day I was treated as if I owned a particular dog. I was at Drive By and as normal, I was there first by an hour or so. It was a summer weekend so I arrived around 7am so I could hop on the best easy/moderates instead of waiting in line and my daughter could get burns on Easy Rider. An hour or so after arriving another party showed up with what appeared to be a friendly dog and tied him up right on the exit of the approach trail near where my stuff was. Because I was sitting there when they arrived, the dog must have assumed I was sort of a part owner of this space of ground because he never bothered me all day. I could come and go as I pleased, I could sit there and chill a few feet from him, and if I didnt know better I would assume it was a well behaved dog. Turns out, this dog was super aggressive, and would bark violently at everyone who entered the crag from that approach path, bearing teeth, and strain the leash in an attempt to get at these unwelcome invaders of his space. Everyone got pissed at me for not controlling this violent dog. When I explained it wasn't my dog, they then assumed I was part of the party that brought the dog and was chastised further. The owner was nowhere to be found, not sure what he got up to tbh. One couple who brought a smaller dog started lecturing on how this dog could potentially kill their tiny dog even after I explained I wasn't the owner nor knew them. I cant believe people bring their dog and just deal with this backlash. It sucked for me, and I wasnt even the owner. The amount of stress added to the day of so many people including myself was considerable. I wouldn't say it ruined the day for anyone, but it was a real thorn in the side to a nice fun day of climbing. I do have friends who bring dogs, but I just cant see it being worth it, I really dont get it at all. I could see hiking with a dog perhaps. |

grug gwrote: How did I miss this.... Wild Bruno still trying to keep pro Dogs a thing. Like they majority of people against them at crags are just saying time and place for them. Its okay to love dogs. There are people who love boa constrictors. In fact the love them so much they would take them places like Florida. Now Florida has an invasive species problem. Time and place know you and your animals limits. We're the sentient species lets act like it. I'll check back in a few months to see if this is still Bruno's entire personality. |

A off leash dog got into someones bag at a crag over the weekend and ate a dose of magic mushrooms that it dug out from three nested containers. Owners refused to take responsibility and blamed the bag owner (who was on a top rope solo when the dog started going through their stuff). I love my dog. She stays at home, where she can't get into other peoples stuff. |

This gets beter and better! Before it was just crazy, vicious, dogs at crags....now it's crazy, vicious dogs tripping on shrooms! Wasn't there a movie about bears on cocaine? I think we should merge the anti-dog and anti-bear threads into one wild animals on drugs thread. |

Climber owning and possibly ingesting illegal drugs while top role soling at a crag = good guy with solid responsibility and community values Person bringing dog to crag = entitled and selfish misanthrope with no sense of responsibility and twisted values (For the record, I have nothing against shrooms, top rope soling, or dogs, obviosuly) |

Nice try Will...maybe they sampled a cap or two before climbing? Maybe they planned to take them on the way out, perhaps while driving home? Or is there public tansportation at this crag? Who knows why solo climber had muhrooms in the bag. We always hear voices complaining about top rope soling at crowded crags--where are those voices now? This appears to have been a crowded crag, and on a weekend no less! Was the solo climber hogging a route? What if the solo climber had an accident and others had to witness or help. How selfish! Who has worse manners, the solo climber or the dog bringer? Just challenging you to, like, "Check your perspective, bro." |

I have my fair share of petting cute well-behaved crag dogs, but also sometimes get barked/attacked/lunch stolen by crag dogs. Obviously it’s the owners’ fault to not leash/train their dogs properly, or recognise the crag might be too complex and stressful of an environment to their particular dogs. This is not unlike other outdoor etiquette issues, where proper education is needed. But I do found it way easier to ask people to take down their hammock than stopping/compensating for their crag dog’s annoying behaviours. Apology means very little (still better than nothing) when I lose my lunch and get hangry. I think if someone’s crag dog stole my lunch, the owner should share me some food as compensation Dog owners are responsible for their dog’s behaviour. Entitlement of some dog owners is 10000000 times for annoying than a bad crag dog. |

I don't understand the dog ate my lunch crowd. Do you people leave your lunch out on a picnic spread, or what? I've even read where a dog supposedly "got in a pack" somehow? Did it bite the buckles open or manip zippers with its paws? These are the questions that keep me up at night. I suspect two things: 1. Lunch was left accessible, with pack open, sandwich on top, smell-billboard wafting across the footpath secretly whispering to a dog - come eat me. 2. Some people are lying about their lunch. Now if dog tore into a secure pack with tooth and nail, ripping it apart and savagely gnawing a ham sandwich while the climber cowered on a scramble ledge just out of the snarling canine's reach, starving mind you, well, I could muster more sympathy and probably sleep better too. But as it is, I'm thinking dog eating lunch is red herring. |

Why don't we just settle this debate with a vote? "Like" either this or the next post and we will see where people stand. (Let's pretend there is no middle ground, no exceptions for good dogs, no caveats for leashes or not , etc. ) The next post will be pro dogs. DOGS AT CRAGS : NO |
|
Vote here for pro dogs DOGS AT CRAGS: YES! |
|
People are already voting by bringing their dogs. |
|
The world is a better place when people have dogs for pets. If Putin had a puppy he probably would have not invaded Ukraine |
