I'll be down in Las Cruces the end of April/start of May and had hoped there might still be reasonable shade+temps in Cochise Stronghold at that time, but I'm not sure whether anything's doable by that point. I've done the obvious NW facing routes on End Pinnacle (Welcome to the Machine and Endgame), but that exhausts my list of classics that I know get most-of-the-day shade.
Any suggestions in the 5.8-10 range that get a lot of shade? Will it even be reasonable in the shade? Or should I just drive up Mt Lemmon to the Fortress or go to the Sandias?
It's theoretically possible at that time of year, but you might want to start early and quit climbing shortly after noon (as well as staying in the shade). I think here are some generally shady spots on the west side (e.g. warpath dome) in the morning
Oh dang, I've been wanting to do that one. Good to know!
I traded one 'spooky' face climbing area for another and wound up climbing 'sport' and trad at Hueco (closer to Las Cruces, knew it had shade). Remembered why I stopped climbing there without advance planning - getting a day pass without a reservation blows. Almost would've been more time efficient to drive the extra hour or so to Cochise. Still great climbing, though.
