Interesting Design Ideas?

I'm going to be learning how to do some tarp sheltering/camping here in the spring of 2024 and came across a custom tarp maker. I'm curious if there's any go-to ideas for designs I could have them make or just any general advice. I suppose with is a tarp shelter question advice thread if nothing else! I live in Michigan and will be headed up to the UP.

Probably much better responses on a backpacking or wilderness survival forum.

Perhaps buy a cheap tarp and some tarp clamps and tinker until you know what you want? Depending on how long and extreme your camping is, you might do fine without resorting to a custom shelter. It's been 50 some years since I did such a thing, but it worked fine for week-long backpacking and canoeing trips. I've only been in one hurricane (remnant by the time it got to Maine) when sleeping under such a shelter.

You are going to be paying a premium for any custom tarp.  For camping I don't see any benefit of getting a custom size tarp.  You chould check out HammockGear or Dutchware Gear for different tarp options.

I use an Eno Sil-nylon hammock tarp for my tarp camping.  I got really into hammock camping a decade ago so it made sense.  I don't know if they are a good value or not but I can vouch for the quality ca. 2012.   Never saw the need to order something custom sized.

No experience with tarp camping personally, but you could check out Ray Jardine’s book on tarp camping and DIY tarp kit:

You could learn to sew and make your own tarp. Honestly a pretty good starter project once you get some basics down. Could potentially even get rolling in some local co-op or maker space so you don't have to buy a machine. Here are a couple links to get the gears turning that direction.

Your local library may also have sewing machines.  The library closet to me now has them.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
