Hi, random but a friend is planning a bachelor party in the Rochester area. The groom is not a fan of heights but likes to be challenged….so is anybody aware of any great rappels/cliff jumps/other height related attractions in the Rochester area? I’ve been to Letchworth but everything seemed pretty chossy there.

Tall routes we could rig on TR or set up a double rope rap on?

I am not from the Rochester area but hail from New England. TIA

The Rochester area is starved of quality rock--all rock, actually, so I believe that you are pretty much out of luck in that regard. There is a Central Rock Gym branch located in Rochester, so you may want to contact them to see if they have any suggestions.

You can rappel Warsaw Falls and Attica Falls when they run dry in late August. They're both pretty tall.  The rock is slate and not safe to climb though. About an hour from Rochester.

Rochester native here, it's likely the worst place in the country to be a rock climber. There are shale cliffs all over, but all of them will crumble under a little weight. There are cliffs in the city proper, tons of stuff in the fingerlakes, and good views with heights at Letchworth State Park to the west.

If you want an excellent hike that brings you up a cliff, check out Conklin Gully near Naples. You can hike up the gully itself and go right to the ridge trail or just hoof it up the rifge if you don't want to get wet.

Having lived in New Orleans, I can beg to differ on somewhere just 4.5h from the gunks being the worst place in the country to be a rock climber.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
