Petzl Dual Connect Adjust on tie-in loops

Disclaimer: this is not a clove-hitch vs lanyard thread.
Can you use a Petzl Dual Connect Adjust on your tie-in loops? Or is the loop too small to fit through? I cringe at the sight of climbers in my country using those on their belay loops. Asking because the Dual Connect Vario is out of stock everywhere and I might grab it if it's possible.

(I know it's in the official instructions but damn).

Follow the instructions of your safety equipment, and girth it to your belay loop.

If you can’t bring yourself to do that, sure, use your tie-in loops.

I appreciate the condescending tone. Considering any sensible climber can see why girthing a piece of rope to the belay loop can wear it off more often than the alternative.

Thankfully I think the folks over at Petzl have conflicting opinions on this, because the official Dual Connect Adjust Page illustrates the dual connect adjust tied to the tie-in loops (pic related). Maybe send them an e-mail?

I think it's hard to discern exactly how the lanyard is attached in the picture, but regardless, Petzl recommends girth hitching to your belay loop. As long as it's not constantly girth hitched to the same exact spot on your belay loop all the time, I don't think it will put undue wear and tear on the belay loop. In my experience, if you girth hitch through tie in my points, it cinches down the tie-in points, which makes the harness uncomfortable.

I have the Dual Connect Vario, and I usually prefer to tie it in with a Figure 8 or overhand through the tie-in points, but I'll often girth hitch it through the belay loop for convenience when it's only on my harness for a short time, like when cleaning a sport route.

Some people freak out about girth hitching tethers or lanyards to the belay loop, but IMO it's perfectly fine as long as you don't keep it hitched to the exact same spot all the time.

The tie-ins are immune from wear, but the belay loop will disintegrate into dust if you look at it wrong. Even though they’re made of the exact same material. Right.

The loop is too short to properly attach to the tie-in points. It's possible but it's not the best way to rig it.

The belay loop is the place to attach it to.

You can send them a concerned email if you want; as for myself, I follow the product instructions and don’t worry too much. Anyway, if you remove the Connect Adjust after every day of use (as recommended in the instructions) and girth it to your belay loop (as recommended in the instructions), I’m sure you’ll be fine.

Sorry about the perceived tone - have fun and stay safe.

Yes, you can - though Petzl don't recommend it from a comfort perspective only.

No, I just checked with mine and it fits fine on my harness through the tie in points.

(1) The belay loop is insanely strong. If you are inspecting your harness and there is no dangerous wear, it isn’t going to fail.

(2) A PAS through the hard points makes the harness uncomfortable due to how it pulls the points together.

(3) A PAS through hard points makes it harder to tie in—especially with double rope systems.

(4) harness manufacturers have started to publish in manuals that it is entirely safe to tie in to the belay loop. See Petzl tech info and Edelrid. While I wouldn’t tie in like this for sport climbing as it may wear a bit quicker, I often tie in this way in winter conditions—ice or general mountaineering/alpine. It is much easier to see and have out of your puffy coats.

Thanks, I'm glad to see this pointed out - this is what I was looking for. I'm curious to try it out myself and it makes sense for it to be a comfort thing. (I bought mine from an online retailer that'll take a while to ship my order)

I go with tie in points because when I’m aid climbing I can get in much closer to my piece than if I was on the belay loop.
honestly I haven’t minded it at all. YMMV

I don't have a dual connect but you can always do a "bowline on a bight" if you don't want to cinch together your tie in points or if you don't like a girth hitch rubbing your belay loop in the same spot all day..

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
