Stoney Point Wet Rock Warning

But Guy- “sometimes I wanna Break Shit!”
Yesterday Stony was hit with a full on “cloud burst”- as I was getting out of my car- I go there almost everyday to walk around- a warning was issued by the National Weather Service, with much fanfare, loud beeping and sirens on my phone saying the northwest valley and Chatsworth was going to be “hit hard”. This time they were correct. It absolutely poured, first came huge rain drops that turned to the largest hail stones I’ve ever seen in California. All this lasted for over a hour and the place flooded out and the “creek” overflowed and made a lake on Topanga that stopped traffic. |

Hey Guy. Are there any crappy problems you don't mind me destroying while it's wet? Maybe something on carousel Boulder? |

3-13-24 It’s drying out, we didn’t get the rain that was forecasted and now some Santa Anna winds. |

3-19-24 Stoney is good to go! Any sprinkles yesterday only lasted a few minutes. The Santa Anna’s have dried out the free standing boulders. The cliffs with dirt at the top (Amphitheater) for example, are still running water. Have fun. |

3-23-24…… sorry to say it started raining hard at 4.00am, last night. |

Quinn Hatfieldwrote: 3-27-24 Despite the fact that it rained Sunday evening- many people were out yesterday (Tuesday) bouldering and having a great time. I guess it’s the fact that the sun is shining and flowers are blooming makes folks think it’s just fine to climb. I’m fighting an uphill battle with little support except from a few friends who understand what’s at stake. For everyone who has been staying away- I thank you. This rainy season will stop someday, hopefully the good problems will still be there. Quinn…. Hope you can come out and see what has changed in the last few months. We need a report. I can no longer do the classics around back due to old age so I can’t tell if “Power Glide” or “Yabo Arete” or any of the classics have broken. Another thing. Some one has been wiping out the graffiti by mearly painting over it with brown paint and a paint roller! This is way more F*cked up than MS13 announcement that they are back in charge. If you happen to see someone rolling out an entire boulder with Brown paint please tell them that “any and all painting is against the law in LA City Parks” and if possible get me a name and a license plate. I will take it from there. THX |

Hey Guy- I’m due for a return to Stoney Point.. I was back out there regularly in the beginning of COVID- but the reports of all the breakage a bit later bummed me out so much that i honestly have had a hard time going back.. I just hate that some of my favorites are lost or altered.. I’ll make a point of getting out there the next dry spell we have!! |

I was there on Saturday the 16th and it was wet. there was a little stream flowing in to dark side of the moon/Johnson arete/vaino arete area. I've never seen anything like that. I climbed the down climb to boulder 1. and I climbed the down climb to Turlock. I am part of the problem. I talked to one dude under the crack and asked him if he was climbing and he said it was too wet and I liked that. there were a lot of people climbing boulder 1 and the sunny Side of Turlock, but no boulderers anywhere else. there were a lot of people top roping from potholes to beehtoven. at boulder 1 it was wet under a tiny layer of dry ground around the entire boulder. pile ups seemed dry actually, it gets a lot of sun. B1 and Turlock were worse than boulder 1 and dark side was very wet. |

Wish I lived closer to help out. I do follow this thread closely though to see if it's climbable and worth the trip. Very much appreciated. |

I’m not sure posters here understand what “annual” means. Unless over 200 years have elapsed since the start of this thread |
Quinn, Choss and Woolly- thanks for the support. John- yes, Annual means “one time each year”…. Like your colonoscopy is annual or semiannual if you like those things…. Thanks all |

3-30-24 It rained, hard all night. |

John Clarkwrote: So John, do you have beef with me? Are you just bored? Bitter? But thank you for bumping the topic. |

Guy Keeseewrote: Bored and pedantic. As OP you could just delete the Annual part of the title. Also, what is with your generation in SoCal always assuming beef first and boredom second? |
John Clarkwrote: My generation? So let me guess. You have a problem with the “annual” part of the title. I’ll try to explain- we get rain every year for a short time- only a short time. People only need this information for a few months out of every year. Hence the annual part. For folks interested in Stony conditions, I’ll keep letting you know the days it has been raining so you don’t waste your time and gasoline driving across this hellhole we live in. Later all, Happy Easter. |

I appreciate the updates Guy! Rain can be unpredictable here and it's nice having someone on-the-ground that can give reliable info. Used to live in the valley, but now that it takes me 45 minutes to get there it's good to be able to avoid showing up to wet rock. Also I just assume most people understood the thread became a more general update thread lol
