Cody Wyoming Ice Guidebook?
|
|
Is there a Cody Wyoming Ice Guidebook everyone uses? Just use MP? What's the word? |
|
|
The book is called “Winter Dance”, it’s long out of print. Copies are pretty expensive on the secondhand market. The American Alpine Club library has some lending copies if you are a member.

Try calling the gear shop in Cody they sold me a copy and mailed it to me. |

MP has all the "Classics" and a pretty good majority of the routes in the South Fork proper. If you want to get a layout of the area you can check out this map I made with GPS tracks to a lot of the more common routes. caltopo.com/m/R6NT |

That caltopo map is pretty awesome. Between that and MP, I bet I'll do fine on my first visit with just the ol' iphone SE. If it's so rad I know I'll be back, (sure it will be), I'll start shopping around for winter dance. Cheers, Guys. |

Latest update on the guidebook is that it will come out this fall. According to rumor it will cover not only the South Fork, but the entire Big Horn Basin. Also, its probably hard to keep up with all the new routes Dane Steadman and Cody Winckler are putting up. |

Dallin Careywrote: HA! True that! |

Dallin Careywrote: They are on one. Love to see it. |

Dallin Careywrote: He has said it will come out in the fall of 20xx for the past 4-5 years. In the spring of 2023 he even made an announcement it would be released at the WY ice fest in Jan of 2024. Now it is yet again pushed off another year. I don't say all this to knock Mulkey (I am sure it is a TON of work) but just to temper expectations that it may or may not actually come out this fall. |

|
My hope is it will come out this fall (and that it will have as few #FordBronco adds as possible). My expectations are not as optimistic. |

There is also a south fork map (no longer in print) that is highly valuable as is shows dots for each pitch and they are color coded for difficulty. Hardly complete, but provides a really good lay of the land. |

There should be a copy of Winter Dance at the Cody Library that you can check out for a couple weeks. |

John Sigmonwrote: I bought mine there 2 years ago. They had a stack of new copies in a drawer. I had called and they told me they had it, then I came to the store and another store person said they didn't. I pressed a bit and we found the person I talked to on the phone, and she was like yep see we have a bunch. So it might depend on the person you talk to, but they might have some stashed away somewhere. |

Mr. Southforkwrote: I have your original from early 90's! Picked it up in Cody my first trip there I think in 92', thank you for the inspiration! Also laminated years ago the piece with your drawings in rock and ice. New digital books and photos are nice but something to be said for grass roots hand drawn topos! I am still more apt looking at a USGS quad than a satellite image to visualize terrain, skills my father passed to me when I was a young boy. Pouring over those maps with my imagination is precisely how I discovered the crags and ice climbs hidden around here. Technology doesn't twist a wrench!! |

Winter dance is widely available on the used market. Post up in the for sale forum. Guarantee you get a DM or two |

Alyssa Kwrote: I made these in June... |

I know this is a recently revived old thread, but Base Camp in Billings had a few copies that were still priced at face value when I was in there not too long ago... The eBay and occasional Amazon prices can get pretty ridiculous and Winter Dance is still easily the best book for the area until Mulkey finishes his book. |
