New and Experienced Climbers Over 50 #26

So is anybody here going to Hollywood, Friday evening, to catch Bulwinkle’s book release? I will be in attendance. Wouldn’t miss it. I first met Dean when him and Shawn Curtis and Gary Aires were trying to rap off of the “Old Woman” in the dark. Headlamps hadn’t been invented yet and nobody carried flashlights with them. Anyway the book said one 50m would get you down. Only issue is you’re descending into a hole and it’s pitched black in there. Dean couldn’t see anything and was truly at the end of his rope- he had the end in his hand and was about 8 feet above “the deck” but didn’t know. He started yelling for help… My cousin Gordon and I were at the campsite right there and responded to the cries for help. I walked into the hole and turned on my flashlight. Right into his eyes. He realized he was almost down dropped off the end of the rope and called “off rappel” … him and friends came over to my campsite, smoked some and drank beer. |

Guy Keeseewrote: ^ Guy, what's Dean's new book about? Can you post some info about it and the release event? I won't be able to be in LA, but would like to know more! |

Todd, nice goatee! And in solidarity to your quick return to the rock, we ladies will also not shave our goatees. Well, I had my Kaiser visit this morning. After my rant here, I have to say it was impressive. I was brought in 15 minutes ahead of my scheduled appointment. I showed my doctor the picture from the scene of the crime. He sent me down the hall for x-rays and I was through with that in under 10 minutes and back in the doctors office to discuss. I ask you, have you ever seen more beautiful knees? Even my patellas are beautiful! (is the plural of patella patella? My iPhone does not like the S added to patella.)
OK, got it NO FLAP. What that means, I fear, is that I will have to climb my least favorite rock around here for a while… The overhang macho stuff. So who else would like to share pictures of their various body parts that they are proud of? I’m very proud of my knees. —- On another front J Tree Resolers is out 10 weeks to resole a pair of shoes. They do have C4 rubber. Colden, I’ll send you a note. Bike shop is closed until December 27. You can reserve bikes from 27th on on-line. And Mars is currently in retrograde. |

Guy Keeseewrote: GREAT story!!!!! |

I've got a half dozen pair of `15-year-old tele skis and bindings here (mine and Bruce's) for sale cheap, but don't have the energy to ship them. |

Guy Keeseewrote: Cool story. I always always tie knots in the end. Even when I know I don’t need to. That way it just becomes a normal habit. |

Carl Schneiderwrote: Hi Carl- you do understand that all rappels back then were on swami belts. Having a knot and getting stuck on your swami was a death sentence. Lots of people did hand over hand rappels off of the short JT get downs. Things were different. |

I can't believe nobody has responded to this yet :). So many possibilities... Also, medically speaking the plural is patellae, which is the correct Latin plural. However, patellas is fine for normal conversation and writing. |

Lori Milaswrote:Even my patellas are beautiful! (is the plural of patella patella? My iPhone does not like the S added to patella.) 2016 knees. Just standing there, on a footstool... Gotta stop hunching my shoulders every time I do anything, lol! And yes, I'm merely on the top of the rings, not in the hang part. Oh, and the chains are actual chains and hangers, retired from the local climbing area. Pretty nifty to be able to put stuff in your house, cuz it's your house. Not proud of the body parts, really, but glad that I had Paul take the pics. Something to measure against, down the road. Plus pleased I got the rock rings hanging up again to annoy me. I'm definitely stronger now, and there's muscles in there under the cheesecake somewhere. That's the upside of spending time with a trainer, and strength training on free weights. Downside is, I've gained weight, even though I'm more muscular. Plus, is, I know I can make strength gains, and keep mobility (way way better than 2016!), it's just the doing of it that's hard for me. Dunno that I'll get any bendier, no matter what I do, but I'm still better ROM than replacement knees would be. Oh, and part of the weight gain is being off of antidepressants too, which is annoying. It's grey here, and jussst cold enough I'm not very motivated to be outside much, but feel guilty about that. Sunny out, sure, but dreary is a no. Haven't climbed in ages, sad to say. Oh well. After many many years, I've started back into doing artwork. That's fun, but, like so many things, it takes doing stuff regularly to be any good at it. And, I know I'm capable of that, so that's annoying too. Then there's me and housework...... Helen |

Tim Schafstallwrote: I USED to be proud of my arms. I’ve had ladies tell me I had nice arms. That was before I snapped my biceps tendon in each arm. Now I look like Popeye. Photo is before they snapped about 8 years ago. I was about 53. |

Old lady Hwrote: Helen Rock Rings are great. They allow for a very natural hand position. Of course you probably know you can transition to doing pull-ups or hangs with one hand on the jug (as you have now) and one hand on a pocket. Also, just hanging on the pockets is great. |

Russ Wallingwrote: I would not bet against this. |

Tim Schafstallwrote:..Also, medically speaking the plural is patellae, which is the correct Latin plural. However, patellas is fine for normal conversation and writing. To be more specific, patellae is the nominative and vocative plural - although you're not likely to need the latter unless you're in the habit of directly addressing components of your lower limbs; "O kneecaps - ye seem a bit creaky today....etc". When used in the context of Lori's original example - "meae patellae pulchrae sunt", or thereabouts [it's been a long time] - the patellae are the subject of the clause/sentence, so the nominative form is used. If, however, the kneecaps are the object of the sentence - as in, for example, "meas patellas per malleo ledo" - the accusative case is required which, as can be seen in the example, uses the '...as' ending. So 'patellas' is not always incorrect. 'Patellae' is also the genitive and dative singular - but let's not get into that. Edit. Wow; a first! I've just got through a whole post on the Latin declension of nouns without mentioning the ablative - err.....oh sh*t. |
