Have a chance to move to LA. How's the climbing?

Guy, no you can’t. The outbound drive is ten hours on every holiday and every weekend and returning from anywhere on any road is ten hours. Stop making up fantasies. And you’re in a distant suburb. Not all of so cal is distant suburbs. Enough with the delusional cheerleading. People who work 8-5 live in the real world.

Not My… you are dead wrong my friend, I live 8 miles from the City of Angels. Holidays can be and are an issue to be sure. But personally I find San Diego to be far worse driving wise. I feel for my SD brothers and sisters when I head south and see the sign- by Mammoth. San Diego 405 miles.
So keep spewing BS if it makes ya feel good.

For Karl…..

try this on for size:

https://www.mountainproject.com/area/107965156/fish-creek-rock

And please keep your eyes open, you drive past at least 4 really good spots for Climbing.

I will not spill the beans on places I get taken to. That is why folks share with me the information to the new spots.

If you wish DM me and ask- that way I can be true to my word.

Because that's where the 15 goes. You don't go through LA, but anywhere around Temecula will be backed up and 215 is often a fucking mess. You hit traffic from Temecula to Murrieta, and then again in the Riverside clusterfuck, and then once more before getting on the 215. You can take the 247 to Barstow, but that only cuts off one potential traffic hotspot and isn't actually faster unless shit is really bad East of Riverside.

This is all much shorter if you live in Riverside, but then you also have to live in Riverside.

I love this answer. Totally in keeping with the Californians. You rock.

Andy Rice, are you retired or unemployed or a trust find kid? Those are ways to exist in LA and climb. You’re welcome.

Guy stop with your hallucinations . All 3 mega Metro areas in Cal have long gridlock rush hours. Monday to Friday  5-10 am and 2-8 pm.  Leaving Friday and getting back Sunday is a multi hour ordeal. Need to take off from work Friday  and Monday. You’ve wrong and your cheerleading encouraging more people to jam the roads is non sensical. Unless you’re a real estate agent. Living in LA is horrible unless a work from home multi millionaire , retired or unemployed and you like being homeless. Which one are you? Again, being in the heart of LA CITY is worse then the suburbs. The suburbs are still bad.

Although entertaining to read, this thread is absolutely ridiculous. For some people Los Angeles works and others it obviously won’t.

The locals have known for decades that the Santa Monica Mountains running through Los Angeles ( Purple Stones, Tunnel Boulders, Saddle Peak, Piuma Pinnacle, Malibu Creek State Park, The Slab That Time Forgot, Point Dume, Black Flower, Corpse  Wall, Tick Rock, Calabasas Peak, and Echo Cliffs to name most but not all of them ) and the areas north of Chatsworth in the San Fernando Valley (Still in Los Angeles such as Stoney Point, Martians Landing Aka Garden of the Gods, Box Canyon, and Rocky Peak ) provide many areas to enjoy excellent bouldering and rope climbing. I have now been climbing  in Los Angeles for 50 years in addition to traveling to many climbing destinations all over the world and find the local climbing and weather excellent.

You are retired, don’t commute, you are in a distant suburb and when you drive to climb you sit in massive half day long traffic jams. Stoney point and tick rock are choss garbage.

This is the dumbest thread on MP right now, maybe that’s why I love it so much!

3.5 hours North… no climbs on this baby- yet.
Not my…. You sound like the most bitter curmudgeon ever.

Enjoy yourself

None of the above. Are you saying that John Long isn't a climber? He's worked as a teacher in LA for many years (in addition to writing) and lives within a couple miles of me.

What's the traffic like though?

I  must laugh reading your quote that I am retired and don’t commute.

Maybe Google  “David Katz Real Estate”

In 2023 I listed and sold properties from Hollywood ( corner of Santa Monica Blvd and El Centro ) to Santa Barbara ( just below San Marcos Pass )

You might want to do some research before you make such claims

If you find yourself hopelessly stuck in LA traffic trying to reach the crag, at least you can listen to some good tunes:

Or, upon losing all hope, you decide to "get away from California ..... maybe in another life, you'll like to stay ... "

See also, Largo's story about Tobin jumping off the Green Arch. It begins with some cute lines about leaving LA in the dust, headed east. Some things never change!

...

P.S. Andrew, the Californians sketches on SNL always have me in stitches. You're headed to josh? On the 210? What are you , CRAZY , it's gonna be JAMMED

"Stuart, how do YOU know so much about Tick Rock?"

Stuart and Karina are meeting up at Tick Rock for a discreet, yet very steamy belaytionship. And in the choss no less. How improper!

....

I moved here from Wisconsin so I have to confess to adding to the horrible gridlock that plagues us all. I would go back but unfortunately I made too many amazing friends here :(

This whole time I could have been hangin in a dive bar slingin Pabst Blue Ribbons instead of climbing on sunny rocks. Where did it all go wrong ????

When Nazis started openly marching down State st. in Madison?

jt newgard · · San Diego, CA · Joined Jul 2016 · Points: 461

That would be a low point for sure although I lived in Madison for 6 years and it was a wonderful place to be. We marched to the state house when Gov. Walker was going after the teachers union. Protecting state funds from corrupt greedy teachers probably seemed like a good idea at the time, especially since they have so little free time to fight back (you know .... from teaching our kids and all ... ) however he was voted out of office.... Good riddance!

... ok back to climbing ...

Rode my bicycle to Devils Lake all the time, never climbed once! It’s just not as much in the popular culture back home! What do you guys think would take longer, driving to Idy thru LA ( maybe 8-10 hrs I’d say, 14 hrs if there’s traffic ) or catching a quick flight back to the motherland ?

Another reason- the best sport climbing in the LA area will never reopen. Williamson rock.
If you’re retired like Guy, or live an hour from LA, like Guy, or can climb weekdays like Guy, or are wealthy and live west of 405 like Andy, live in so cal or the Bay Area. If not and you’re climbing weeknights and weekends, it’s two to 4 hours each direction including hiking to climb. Took an hour to find a place to park at point Dume Malibu LA. It’s an hour in line to get in j tree . It’s a 1-2 hour hike to the climbing after parking in Idyllwild. So cal includes 6 counties. Bay Area is giant. Move to Fresno.

John climbs in the west LA climbing gym. He works part time from home and is mostly retired. Climbing weekdays is OK as long as you don’t drive 5-10 am or 2-8 pm. Night climbing with headlamps is doable.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
