2 hairs to split with this:

1) Carrying the rope outside the pack (not necessarily in the hands - maybe over the shoulders) makes it easier to negotiate short 2nd-3rd class steps and fallen trees - often you can just toss the rope.  Obviously, it needs to be well enough coiled.

2) Hiking down, especially after a long day, carrying a rope in one hand (or over the forearm) reduces its impact on the knees with each step.  Somehow the elbow/shoulder either absorbs the rope's bounce or delays it to where it doesn't hit the knee at the same time as the rest of your body.
