Same here. I thought that the big is toe broken for sure but it is gout. With not more beer and burgers for me, I might be climbing again in a month or two.

Did you had to go on medication?

Yes, I take 300 mg of allopurinol daily and have colchicine on hand for flare ups. I might get a few minor flare ups a year.

If you get gout meds and it is indeed gout, it should clear up VERY quickly. I got my first case of gout this winter and was back to climbing within a couple of days of starting indomethacin.

NEVER DOWNSIZE. Get a shoe that fits your foot shape and buy a snug pair.

It's not though, leather shoes like the classic Mythos stretch a half size after a long weekend of climbing. Synthetic shoes I can agree with but not unlined leather shoes, always downsize them.

But it's the rubber that doesn't stretch and if you downsize, *that's* what is hurting the big toe - being jammed into the (shorter) length of the shoe.

Dang free foot pics and rightfully so. You all have no future in the foot pic industry.

HUGE MISTAKE. Maybe it will work out, or maybe you will walk away with an injury for life.

You can't blanket statement all shoes, thats a horrible and costly idea when someone buys shoes that are gonna stretch a full size in a season. You have to know the specific shoe, maybe ask questions to an experienced sales person if you have no experience with the shoe, something that buying online doesn't accomplish very well.

He wasn't - he was referring to your comment about Mythos.

Mythos are not going to stretch a full size in length.

Ok, 3/4 size if you actually climb a bunch. My two pairs stretched in length so much that my heels started popping out of the shoe. Also had a few unlined Scarpas  do it too. Painfully tight shoes have a purpose, just not a long day of easy climbing purpose. Nobody standing on tiny edges and nubs has comfy feet and climbing isn't the only sport where people fuck their feet up for performance.

Maybe the argument should include grades and styles cause most climbers I know have a large quiver of shoes not just a comfy all day gym shoe.

I will agree that once you start getting into advanced/elite realm there can be an argument for tight shoes. For average joes on 5.10s you sure don't need tight shoes.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
