Bouldering near Santa Rosa NM?

Anyone scoped the climbing/bouldering potential along the Pecos near Santa Rosa NM?

I drive through there a few times a year en route to some relatives in southern NM and have always wondered whether it's worth stopping to explore, upstream toward the dam in particular.

The obvious boulder field south of Corona NM is another one I've always wanted to stop in and check out, but by the time I get there it's always nightfall.

Just curious if anyone's checked either of these out and found them worthy/unworthy (which would save me a gamble on spending the night in the middle of nowhere).

I was just driving around that area not too long ago, definitely a cool area! The big question is going to be property rights and access. BLM and the state of NM have some good land use maps that might be useful:

  • BLM maps, especially the public webmap, are really useful for tracking down land ownership (private, tribal, state, federal agency, etc.). From these it looks like it's mostly private land around the locations you listed, but there's also some public land around too.
  • NM State Land Office maps, especially the general land status map, also has some information on land uses and leases.
  • It's also a good idea to check in with local officials (whether that's BLM, FS, etc.) and local climbing organizations (NMCRAG is a good resource for access issues).

Good luck and have fun!
