Gear announcement: a stick clip that doesn't suck

If you don’t mind a little bit of DIY, before this product came out, I made my own by drilling out the pin holding the head of the Trango extendable (the beta stick?) stick clip and purchased a rescue clip separately. I used JB weld to adhere the two together. I’ve been using it for about 2 years and it’s been great.

Metolius just came up with their own version. Cool idea but it’s super expensive ($225)

Huh, wild. That's one way to eliminate joints from your design! Very curious how many of these they'll sell at the price point - I figured there was a reason they bought Superclip but this seems like a pretty niche product for sure.

I'll also note that the local climbing shop at Smith has started selling some Skyhook-esque poles at a very good pricepoint: https://www.instagram.com/p/CucYzBOrhcZ/?img_index=1

The "mini" looks like it uses the same twist-lock joint design as the Pongoose, so it'll hold up to tension forces a bit better but is more susceptible to wearing out if dust gets in the twist-lock. The "pro" uses an adjustable camlock joint, which is resilient but I suspect that pole will be pretty heavy - not so much an issue for crags like Smith, but probably a bit less ideal for spots with a longer approach!

Why use a stick clip when you can just sac up and lead it like the first accent party

Has anybody figured out how to fix a sky hook when one of the joints slips?

It’s all about style for some.

The satisfaction of when you truly send something (sharp end leading) is lost

The satisfaction of not hitting the ground when you break choss on a new route is not lost on good route developers.

This david guy is a troll, but also no one is probably going to force him (or anyone) to use a stick clip. Many modern crags are actually bolted expecting that you will have a stick clip, so they can have less clipping and more climbing. It is called sport climbing, not sport clipping. If I offer you a stick clip and you decline and then hurt your ankles, I'm still going to help carry you out of the crag if it's needed. I mean you do you, but like when it affects others... idk, gets less cool.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
