Boys on the Side had a great sound track!  'Why' by Annie Lennox is one of my favorite sad songs.

Kauk is a kind of different character.  On the one hand he was always an arrogant bastard and yet was so 'spiritual' it was always hard to conceptualize.  Any time I climbed with Ron he was always really supportive and is always fun to hang with and I always enjoyed those times.  Not like the rest of us aren't arrogant assholes at times too...

My favorite Ron story, I was walking out to Medlicott Dome in Tuolumne with a woman that I climbed with all the time.  Ron was also walking out with Lonny's girlfriend Katie (they were going to work on Peace).  I was in my late 50s at the time so Ron is in his early 50s.  He looks at me as we are hiking and remarks that we really haven't changed at all and still look great and young and strong.  Well, both women started laughing so hard we all had to stop and wait for them to get over it!

In 2006 Sting did a show at the Hollywood Bowl. Barbara, Lynn Bowering, her man, and I went. Annie Lennox opened, and finished her set with "Why." She totally stole the show. Sting couldn't follow that. Really, no one could have. In a sad attempt to be the main event his people jacked up the sound level, which of course only made matters worse. She came back on at the end and they finished the show with a duet. It was painfully obvious that Sting was not happy.

Wow. I didn’t expect this. What great memories Jan and Kris!     I sent these lyrics to my husband as a goodbye and thank you when we officially decided to separate after 23 years.  I wanted him to know that I understood how painful it was for us both.  Wish I could have been at that concert.

Why...

This is the book I never read
These are the words I never said
This is the path I'll never tread
These are the dreams I'll dream instead
This is the joy that's seldom spread
These are the tears...
The tears we shed
This is the fear
This is the dread

These are the contents of my head
And these are the years that we have spent
And this is what they represent
And this is how I feel
Do you know how I feel?
'Cause i don't think you know how I feel
I don't think you know what I feel.

Lori hi? …. I also got out! Maybe a 25.7 yard approach! Got IT handed to me for my trouble, but fun never the less.
I know what you mean about nausea. One time some Irish dudes and I- “had” to go to Josh in July- you know- just to see the place. 101 in the shade, we go to Right OKellys Crack - cause it’s in the shade. At the top- I rolled on to the summit and lying on my stomach, looking down on my partners below- calmly announced “barf” and hurled on the scattering Irish below. Then it was their turn. I think it must have something to do with inhaling “flaming hot air” - who knows?

Anyway great to know your getting out- keep it up!

And next year- you’re going to COR!
start planning now- find a local house to stay all comfy in, because you guys don’t camp (could always motor home). Tony would dig the drive through Nevada, tons of fellow truckers on the road, eat at Flying-J, gamble some in “Jackpot” NV, see wild horses, snow capped mountains you know- the Wild West.
If you do this, I’ll promise to hook up a stone mobile pizza oven and we can eat fine Italian food- heck I’ll even bring some Italian folks along to add to the vibe.

In closing I ask this Q? Have you binged “Daisy Jones and the Five”?? If knot you should- I enjoyed it a Ton.

Vote for Daisy Jones. Also Queen's Gambit and Friday Night Lights. (I guess we girls have already discussed Tim Riggins.)

Guy, you almost have me convinced. I was just going to suggest that maybe I can ride along in your trunk next time. Besides, I would love to be a fly on the wall when you guys go camping and hear what it is you find to talk about for two full days.  What is this picture and do you need me to teach you how to use a shoe cam.? I do not see you in it.

I’ll talk this over with Tony. Seriously will.

—-

I was in the mood for a strenuous hike this morning, and I managed to get myself in a bad bind not once, but twice. I started out towards Welcome to Joshua Tree and wanted to see the very top of that buttress but managed to have a threatening low blood sugar halfway there. One would think by now I’d be smart enough to be more prepared but all the cans of 7-Up had exploded in my car, so I had limited sugar on me.  Some, but not enough for uphill hike. It pissed me off to have to turn around.

Not to worry, I really wanted to go look at my three pillars over in the Barker Dam parking lot so once I got my blood sugar stabilized, I headed over there. For some reason this area causes me nothing but trouble. I have made so many attempts to get to the third pillar, and never succeeded. I have reasons for wanting to see that rock up close but this is as close as I can get. So today I was scrambling along, looking for a fresh approach, and had yet another blood sugar crash while wiggling through some boulders. Doggonit. I decided best to descend and head for the car before it was a real emergency, but I sort of got mixed up and slid hard into a large bush of cats claw.

I finally extricated myself pretty cut up and bleeding everywhere and came home for some sympathy and to get mopped down. Tony kindly wiped off all the blood he could and then we went to a Mexican restaurant and I should’ve had a margarita.  We ate A TON.

This is my idea of a GREAT day.

May I say, every bit of my morning was enjoyable even fighting off the bush. It was an absolutely perfect morning. It was a gentlest, warm breeze, and I will remember it always.

I try hard not to complain about diabetes, but there is no excuse for laziness here. Exercise complicates it so much even with all the fancy gadgets I have. High blood sugar is tough, but it won’t kill me. A low blood sugar easily could. The problem is the confusion that can come with a rapid low blood sugar, so thinking that I am going to pull out an inreach and send a complicated text to some ranger station is very unrealistic. I just have to be ready for the emergency on my own. I started using cans of 7-Up or other cola because there have been occasions when the screw top cap on a plastic soda bottle is welded and can’t get it off. That’s scary as hell.  I also keep individual packets of pure maple syrup with me, and that is great. Last but not least I have an emergency inhaler but I’ve only ever used once and it felt like a bullet to the brain.  I mean it is a blast so hard it knocks you backwards, but it does save a life.

That sucks Nick. Best wishes.

I love how mother nature likes to remind us who is in charge. Much to our detriment.

Nick,

All I can say is: "We"re gonna need a bigger boat..."

Head for the high ground.

Local scenes:

There's a very, very, very large rock under that big hydraulic.

After Irene in 2011 they made this bridge 2" higher.

These people were also flooded out during Irene in 2011..

That said: compared to other parts of the state, we got off easy.

Stay in touch...

Ps. Scout wonders:"Have you guys heard of this thing they call, 'climate change???'"

Pretty much. That’s their new name. I don’t know what they were called before. Probably something stupid.

Lori… that’s a photo of the approach! Ice chest is in trunk of the Corolla.
And quite serious about COR. Rent smallish RV COR has max size limits. OLH is the expert here about how Idaho works.
Also serious about pizza oven! That needs to be towed and it takes some time to heat up- but after it’s hot it stays that way. I think you would really like the short approaches and the green environment and the Climbing in general.
What we talk about???? You wouldn’t believe it!

To all you east coast folks- the west coast news stations aren’t really talking about the flooding. Is this just from rain? I mean normal rain, not the remnants of a hurricane?
I hope everyone comes through this unscathed.

duh…. Drop a dime on me if you want info on all the places to climb at in So Cal/South Sierra …. Lots of spots.
Or better yet… take me climbing, I can’t really lead stuff anymore but I’m one of the world’s best belayers - oh ya I can’t hike to far - at least with a heavy pack so you must carry all the gear, ropes. I manage my stuff ok - shoes, chalkbag, harness, bear and beer. But you must agree to the rules- no posting on the net.

Nite all

No hurricane Guy, just thunderstorms and a stuck very wet weather pattern.  I usually don’t complain about the weather, but enough already!

The sky is actually blue this morning, at least for now.
