Few buds and myself are climbing the East butt of Whitney at the end of June. We’re curious if there is still snow/ice on the route? And what the snow field at the base is looking like? Any inside scoop would be appresh

I haven't been up there, but there's almost certainly still snow and ice on the route. And almost the entire approach is still snow covered. It'll for sure be a bit better in a few weeks, but don't go up there expecting normal summer conditions.

There is a Mt Whintey Facebook group that is really active and you get pics almost daily to examine the conditons.

Many members are hikers but climbers are happy to help.

Climbed the route on June 1st without having to touch any snow between the start of the rock climbing and the summit. The snowfield at the base is steeper than the mountaineers route next to it (descent).

The crux will likely be the approach to Iceberg. The snow bridges before and after ebersbacher ledges will be melted out by then I believe and the usually uneventful stream crossings will be raging creek/river crossings (I've heard the peak flow rates around here are supposed to be late June).

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
